Read More	Obituary published in Delaware County News on Monday, March 12th, 1900 Drowning Near Masonville The Six-Year-Old Son of David Evans of Coffins Grove Township Goes Down to a Watery Grave Robbie, the little six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. David Evans, living in Coffins Grove township about two and one half miles north of Masonville, was drowned last Friday afternoon, while on his way home from school. As will be remembered, Friday was a warm day and the snow melted very fast, making swift streams across the roads and causing many small and usually placid streams to overflow their banks. The little boy was a student in the village school at Masonville, and when the occurred was on his way home from school, in company with an older brother, about eight years of age. They had arrived at a bridge across a creek, about a half a mile from their home. The creek had overflowed its banks and at one end of the bridge, where the roadbed was quite low, the water was rushing across the highway at a rapid rate. The little fellow started to wade through, thinking he could make it right, although his brother told him he had better not try it, but to wait for their father to come with a team and rig to get them across, which he did a short time afterward. The boy stated that he was too cold to wait. The water ran so swiftly that he was carried off his feet and drowned, his body being recovered some time afterward, lodged near a wire fence at the side of the road where it had been carried by the rushing water. The older boy was unable to render any assistance to his perishing brother and was compelled to be an unwilling witness of the exceedingly sad event, in which his brother was carried down to a watery grave at so young an age. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock in the M.E. church in Masonville, Rev. McGovern, a Wesleyan minister, having charge of the services. Interment was made in the Masonville cemetery. The dead boy leaves a father, mother, and several brothers and sisters to mourn the loss of their brother. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to them at his time of sudden and unexpected sorrow. Contributor: (48278241)
