Ryan, 68, DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday, April 28, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. Robert Francis Ryan was born January 9, 1935 in Grand Mound, Iowa, to Joseph Francis Ryan and Mary Evelyn (Green) Ryan. He graduated from DeWitt High School with the class of 1953, and served in the US Army during the Korean Era. Bob married Charlene Lammers on June 2, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. Being a farmer at heart, he farmed in Clinton County all of his life and worked for various agricultural concerns such as Farm Service, ARCO, Nachurs Fertilizer, and most recently as a seasonal worker at River Valley Cooperative. Bob also enjoyed construction and was a heavy equipment operator for several different companies through IBEW Local 145. Bob enjoyed being involved, and was a Charter Member of the DeWitt Nite Lions. He had been a Director and Past Officer of both Clinton County Cattlemen's Board and Pork Producer's Board; a Director of Clinton County Soil Conservation District; Officer of Clinton County Taxpayers Association Board; served three years as Iowa State Land Use commissioner; and Past Member of Clinton Compensation Board. Bob served on the Central Community School Board, and was a member of various other community service groups. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt and the Knights of Columbus. Bob loved visiting with friends and family, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Surviving are his loving wife of over 40 years, Charlene; their five daughters, Chris McClimon and her husband, Wil, DeWitt; Deb Ryan, DeWitt; Kathy Searls and her husband, Trace, Littleton, Colorado; Cindy Ryan, DeWitt; Lori Ciesla and her husband, Ken, Lombard, Illinois; ten grandchildren, Kaitlin, Nick and Meghan McCliman, Jacob, Ryan, and Garrett Searls, Max, Alexandra, Victor, and Emilia Ciesla; two brothers, David (Ann) Ryan Waterville, Iowa, and Charlie (Kathy) Ryan, DeWitt; three sisters, Lenore McGuire, DeWitt; Janet Burken, and her husband, John, DeWitt; Joyce Spindler, Panama City, Florida. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Don and Ralph. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3 until 8 PM Thursday, May 1, 2003. Knights of Columbus Rosary 7 PM and Parish Vigil Service 8 PM. Liturgy of Christian Burial 10:30 AM Friday, May 2, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Fr. H. Man who Saved Co-worker to Receive Posthumous Award. Clinton--A man who died after suffering severe burn in an anhydrous ammonia spill at a farm co-op in Clinton County will be honored for his heroism. Robert Ryan, 68, of DeWitt, saved a co-worker who was injured in the accident on April 15 near Calamus. He dragged Nathan Nissen, 24, of Welton, up into a tank of water kept on the site for emergencies and held him under. For his heroism, Ryan will posthumously receive the Governor's Lifesaving Award of Valor during the Iowa State Fair. Ryan's widow, Charlene Ryan and the couple's five daughters will accent the award Aug. 8 in Des Moines. Ryan died of his injuries April 28 in Iowa City. Nissen returned home last week after spending weeks in the burn unit at University Hospitals in Iowa City and undergoing rehabilitation at Covenant Memorial hospital in Waterloo. The accident happened when a welded seam on a tank burst, releasing a cloud of the fertilizer and causing severe chemical burns to the two employees at the River Valley Cooperative. The state found no violations of standards. The Governor's Lifesaving Award was founded in the 1970's to honor Iowans who act courageously to save another's life.
