March 16, 1942 - Robert Howard, Skidmore, of Army Air Corps, is on a Pacific Island. Mrs. A. J. Howard of Skidmore received a letter Saturday from her son, Robert F. Howard, a member of the army air corps. This is the first word Mrs. Howard has had from her son since October and at that time he was at Pearl Harbor. He wrote then that he was leaving on a secret mission and would not be able to write for some time, he didn't know how long. The letter recieved Saturday told about his being on an island but his address had been censored. Howard enlisted in the air corps at Reno, Nevada, a year ago last September. He came home on furlough the following Christmas, which is the last time Mrs. Howard saw him. His letter,in part, is as follows: Dear Mom: I am writing this letter not knowing when I will get to send it, if I do. The island we are on is marvelous. Anything will grow on it. Since we have been here, every day has been like Indian Summer except a little warmer and everything is green. It rains about every day the year around, according to the natives, and it has since we have been here. I drove a captain up in the hills about a week ago in what the people call Morro country. It is lot of jungle and places on the road one-half mile at a time where we could hardly see the sky. They (the natives) carry big, long knives and look like they would use them. They were very friendly toward us. We have a nice camp and a swell place to go swimming. We have a truck that brings us chow three times a day and darned good chow it seems to me. (censored) I have a beard about an inch long on my chin and side burns. I think I'll have my picture taken this way or leave it on until I get home. I haven't decided which yet. We have built a table under some trees; we call it the round table. Quite a bunch of us chew the fat about every evening (censored) I am writing this on January 27 and my address is (censored) May 7, 1942. Pvt. Robert Howard is interned in a Phillipines Military prison camp No. 2. He was taken prisoner May 7, 1942, in the battle of Bataan and Corregidor. Word has recently been received from him saying that his health is fair, he was not under treatment and best regards to all. September 7, 1944 he was lost at sea when the ship he was on was attacked and went down.
