Robert G. Kenny, Sr. was born in rural Hecla to George & Tillie (Wanttie) Kenny on December 9, 1929. He lived in rural Hecla on the family farm until 1940 when he moved with his parents to the Houghton area where they continued to farm. Robert attended a country school through his grade school years and attended Hecla High School. Upon his graduation, Robert joined the U. S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. When he returned home from the Air Force, Robert went to Lead, SD and was employed the Homestake Gold Mine. He lived and worked in Lead until he became ill with pneumonia. When he recovered, he decided to move back to the Houghton area. Robert then attended college at Ellendale, ND, where he achieved a teaching degree. On March 31, 1956, he married Lorraine Lacher at Houghton, SD. Eight children were born to this union. After their marriage, he taught school for seven years. In 1965, he purchased the land near Hecla that his great grandfather, Peter F. J. Kruse had homesteaded and began farming. He remained there until his death. Grateful for having shared his life are Lorraine and their eight children, Cheryl (Charles) Swanson, Spearfish, SD, Douglas (Cindy) Kenny, Aberdeen, SD, Bruce Kenny, Britton, SD, Vicki (Steve) Parks, Gillette, WY, Carol Kenny Guscott, Cambridge, New Zealand, Michelle, Kenny, Oakes, ND, Robert (Sarah) Kenny, Aberdeen, SD; Kyle (Kadin) Parks, Gillette, WY; three brothers, Allan (Phyllis) Kenny, Hecla, SD, Sterling (Ruth) Kenny, Houghton, SD, Terry Kenny, Groton, SD; eight grandchildren, Cory and Ryan Kenny, Aberdeen, SD, Kyle and Kadin Parks, Gillettte, WY, Nicole, Rhys, Emily and Gareth Guscott, Putaruru, New Zealand. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Tillie Kenny; one sister, Carol Kenny; one brother, Kenneth Kenny.
