Description	:	ROBERT GLENN (1775--1839) was the eldest son of Scotch-Irish immigrant and American patriot John Glen (1726-1828) and his second wife Jane McLean (ca.1759--1797). He was born in 1775 in old Tryon County, North Carolina, which became Lincoln in 1779 and Gaston in 1846. Read More	ROBERT GLENN (1775--1839) was the eldest son of Scotch-Irish immigrant and American patriot John Glen (1726-1828) and his second wife Jane McLean (ca.1759--1797). He was born in 1775 in old Tryon County, North Carolina, which became Lincoln in 1779 and Gaston in 1846. This territory west of the Catawba River was still considered backwoods but was beginning to fill with a steady flow of sturdy Scotch-Irish and German settlers coming down the Great Wagon Road. His formal schooling, if any, was likely very limited, but his mother, being a member of a family whose father, Alexander McLean, was already a successful planter and whose brother, Dr. William McLean, was a learned physician, was able to expose her children to a fair degree of education for that period of time. In adulthood, Robert Glenn was a farmer, as were his father and most other settlers of that period. It is said that his property was a mile or so south of present-day Union Presbyterian Church, between there and the South Carolina state line. While little is known of his life, it appears that he was successful at his occupation and a Presbyterian by faith. On December 20, 1808, at the age of 33, he married FRANCES "FANNY" GREGORY (1786--1853), one of the fifteen children of Revolutionary War patriot William Gregory (1757-1836) and his wife Margaret Morris (1758--1850), residents in the same general section of old Lincoln County. Robert and Fanny Glenn were the parents of ten children, all of whom were born, lived and died in present-day Gaston County. (1) John Franklin Glenn (7/3/1809--5/7/1889), the oldest, married in 1832 Janette Gray Scott (1812--1902) and they are buried at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery. (2) Nancy Glenn (5/4/1810--5/15/1885) married a second cousin, Stanhope Glenn (11/29/1815--8/1/1882) and they are buried at St. Mark's Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Cherryville. (3) Jane McLean Glenn (7/8/1811--9/21/1868) married her second cousin, Sidney P. Glenn (1814--1878) and they are buried at Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery. (4) Marguerite Salina Glenn (3/20/1813--3/24/1894) married William Groves (1808--1853) and they are buried at Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery. (5) Enos Berry Glenn (1818--3/24/1853) married 1st Juliet Wallace (1805--2/9/1847) and they are buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in adjoining York County, South Carolina. He married 2nd Mrs. Margaret Ann Kendrick. (6) Harriet Frances Glenn (2/25/1821--1/16/1892) married in 1842 Daniel Franklin Ragan (3/8/1808--1/28/1872), farmer, chairman of the county court and representative in the state legislature. They are buried in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery, of which Mr. Ragan was a founder, ruling elder and the first clerk of session. (7) Sarah Susan Glenn (2/9/1825--12/12/1912) married in 1849 Joseph Robert Kincaid (1828--1911) and they are buried at Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery. (8) Elizabeth Ann Glenn (dates unknown) married William Baldwin. (9) Robert J. Glenn (1830--1856) died unmarried at age twenty-six (10) Martha Glenn (dates unknown) is said to be the youngest child and died in her youth. On March 1, 1837, Robert Glenn deeds 220 acres, "his home place on Mill Creek and the waters of Crowder's Creek (adjoining lands of Robert Berry) to his sons John and Enos Glenn." This possibly indicated that he was in ill health by that time. Robert died two years later, in March 1839. His wife, Frances Gregory Glenn, died in May 1853 while milking a cow. Their grave sites have not been located. It is assumed they were either buried in a small family cemetery on the home place, as was common for many farm families in that pioneering rural era or at Bethel Presbyterian Church across the state line in adjacent York County, South Carolina, not far from their farm home. I am a member of Union and the church was not established until 1850. In 1845 three denominations started using the area (Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist) but the land was not acquired until 1845 and eventually it began permanent property of the Presbyterians." *** Many thanks to bskend for above info. Further research required. * * * * *** Many thanks to Robert Ragan (#48653792) for parent links and additional info and who also writes: After considerable research, I suggest that Robert is buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church at Clover, SC, across the state line and not far from his farm home, not at Union. Although three of his children are buried at Union, others are buried at Bethel. I give the following reasons. 1. Union Church was not organized until 1850, twelve years after Robert's death. The Church has no record of any burials at Robert's early death date. 2. The Genealogy of the Glenn family by Dr. L. N. Glenn, professor at Vanderbilt University, in 1907, clearly states that Robert Glenn's family attended Bethel Church and that Robert was buried there in 1838. No stone now exists. 3. Barbara Voorhees , former head of the Glenn Foundation at Gastonia, NC, who is writing a Glenn Family history, confers that Robert is buried at Bethel. * * * *
