Description	:	Robert Harold Birkland, 80, of Helena passed away Monday, March 10, 2008, following an extended illness. Robert was born in Wolf Point, July 5, 1927, to Mina (Rose) and Torval L. Birkland. He attended Wolf Point schools. Robert continued his education and was a graduate from Montana State University in 1971, with a degree in industrial arts and education. Robert was born in Wolf Point, July 5, 1927, to Mina (Rose) and Torval L. Birkland. He attended Wolf Point schools. Robert continued his education and was a graduate from Montana State University in 1971, with a degree in industrial arts and education. He served in the U.S Army, 6th Mechanized Calvary in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. On Dec. 31, 1954, Robert and Marilou Kurtz were married in Wolf Point. Bob was a member of the B.P.O.E No. 193, the American Legion Post No. 2 and Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Helena. Bob had many occupations during his colorful life. His family considers him a "Jack of all trades," and surprisingly he mastered most of them. As a teenager he rode horses, working as a cowboy and hired hand for a ranch in eastern Montana; he owned and operated a dryland farm at age 20; became a respected automotive mechanic and shop foreman at Ford garages in Poplar and Great Falls; rough-necked in the offshore oil wells of Louisiana (where he rode out a hurricane wrapped around the ship's mast); cooked in his family's cafe and bakery; grew corn in Iowa; owned and operated a soft-water business in Great Falls and Helena; was partner and operator of two self-service Helena laundries; was employed as troubleshooter and service mechanic for American Laundry Corporation (his territory covered the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon); designed and built five homes for his family; finished his college education at age 42, earning a degree in industrial arts and education; taught at Capital High and vo-tech schools in Helena; lived overseas for 10 years while employed by the International Division of Dunwoody Institute, teaching plant mechanics to the nationals of Third World countries in Indonesia, Libya and Ghana; worked for the Montana Department of State Lands, where he also designed and built a portable field kitchen that fed fire crews during the fires of '88; designed and developed Oleo Acres, his own subdivision, where he lived happily after retirement, gardening, cooking at the Elks Lodge and designing and building furniture for his home. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leif and Odin Birkland; and three sisters, Martha Budke, Eva Johnson and Lorraine Sherlock. Robert is survived by his wife, Marilou of Helena; sons, Michael Robert Birkland of Helena, and Mitchell Leif (Kerri) Birkland of Lake Jackson, Texas; sisters, Mayme Strom of Helena, Ruth Nash of Beaumont, Texas, Helen Rusche of Helena, and Audrey Iverson of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandson, Zachary Birkland of Lake Jackson; and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews. Burial will follow in the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison.
