Description	:	Robert and Eliza were married the year the western Indians, led by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe went on the war path, so they had to spend the summer of their honeymoon at the Fort near Prairie City. When hostilities ended, they bought a small farm in the upper John Day Valley, Ore. Robert was a freight hauler making regular trips from Prairie City to The Dalles hauling merchandise for local merchants. He drove 10 to 12 horses and 3 wagons on the trip. Once a year Eliza made the trip with him, driving a 2 horse team and a light wagon. In the fall of 1899 they moved from Prairie City, Ore. to Cottonwood, Idaho making the trip in their freighter wagons hauling all their household goods and driving 10 head of cattle driven by two of the children on horseback. Making this trip were Robert and Eliza Deardorff, their oldest daughter Julia and her husband Lincoln Manwaring and 2 children, George, William (Bud), Clara and Harrison. At Cottonwood Robert continued his freighting business until the railroad was built through the territory. In 1912 they moved to Montana about 30 miles east of Brady near Ashmoor. Mr. and Mrs. Deardorff and Clara moved to Montana where all "Took Up" homesteads on land recently opened for homesteading. There were no roads or fences not even houses at this time. They went through all the hardships of starting in a new, raw country. they fought drought, grasshoppers, hail and all the bugs. They did all the farm work with horses for years, hauling water for miles in barrels from reservoirs built earlier by sheep and cattlemen. In about 1920 they moved to a farm north of Collins then to the town of Brady about 1928 or 1929. They had 7 children - the oldest, a boy, died at birth.
