Read More	Obituary from the Spirit Lake Beacon, 6/3/1943, w/photo on last page: Henry Willard Died At Home Here Monday Funeral Services Held at Methodist Church Today Funeral services were held at the Methodist church this Thursday afternoon for Henry Willard, aged 84, who passed away at his home here Monday evening, May 3, at 8:15 p.m. Rev. J.E. Feller conducted the services and burial was made at Lakeview cemetery. Mr. Willard, a resident of Dickinson county since 1910 suffered a stroke November 2, 1942 and his health had failed rapidly since that time. Other strokes since resulted in his losing the use of his right arm, and a fall last week in which his left arm was fractured, hastened his death. His son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Willard have made their home with him and have patiently administered to his wants along with other members of his family living in the community. At the time of his death his five children were at his bedside, his two daughters from California, Mrs. Orvis McIntosh and Mrs. Ralph Ewing of Oakland, having arrived only a few hours before his death. Robert Henry Willard, second child of Robert and Mary E. Willard was born March 27, 1850, near Ogdenberg, New York, and passed away at his home on May 31, 1943 at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 4 days. When a small boy his parents came by boat to Chicago, then to Iowa settling in Clinton county. Later they moved to Greene county where he was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Waters, Oct. 23, 1878. They made their home there until 1910, Mr. Willard being engaged in farming and as a railroad contractor. He also ran a livery business a number of years while living in that community. In the year 1910 they moved to Dickinson county and operated a farm two miles south of Superior for three years. They then purchased the farm on the highway five miles east of Spirit Lake, which they operated for one year; when . . . [one line text missing] Spirit Lake which has since been their residence. In 1916 they moved to the present famiy home which was built that year. Mr. Willard, who had always led an active life went into business again in about 1918 purchasing the buildings occupied by the Marshall Shoe Repair shop and the Ehlbeck Grocery, where he opened a grocery business in partnership with Dr. Moon. Upon Dr. Moon's retirement a short time later, Mrs. Willard joined her husband in the operation of the business, which they continued until 1937 with the expection of a few years when it was operated by another party. When Mrs. Willard's health failed they retired from active business, and in recent years they had spent their winters in California. After 62 years of wedded life during which they shared business and home relations, Mrs. Willard preceded him in death Dec. 18, 1940. Early in his marriage Mr. Willard was converted and became a member of the Free Methodist church in Churdan. Upon coming to Spirit Lake he faithfully attended the Methodist church here although he had not affiliated with the church. Mr. and Mrs. Willard were the parents of nine children, five of whom survive. Two daughters, Pearl, aged two years and Leta, 5 months, died in their infancy and two sons, Ira and Frank died in young manhood. Surviving are: Bert of Spirit Lake, Harry of Spirit Lake, Cora, Mrs. Orvis McIntosh of Oakland, Calif., Clyde of Spirit Lake, and Mable, Mrs. Ralph Ewing of Oakland, Calif., 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Frank Wine of Nicholas, Wisc. also survives but was unable to be here for the services today. His parents and a brother, George preceded him in death. One of Mr. Willard's grandchildren, Darlene McIntosh Deibler of Boone, a missionary in Celebes, Dutch East Indies, has not been heard from for a year and is thought to have been interned by the Japanese.
