Heney Bible _______________________________________________ Blue Lake Advocate, Volume 50, Number 45, 5 March 1938 COUNTY HAS FIRST FATAL MOTORCRASH Hugh Heney of Eureka Is First Highway Victim of 1938 DRIVER OF CAR FACES CHARGES Accident Occured Near Loleta Early Sunday Morning —Others Were Unhurt Humboldt county's first fatal traffic accident in 1938 claimed the life of Hugh Robert Heney, 19, of Eureka early Sunday morning, endangered the lives of others and wrecked two automobiles. The tragedy occurred near Loleta as a machine driven by Peter Claude Carmine, 20, of Eureka, assertedly started around two northbound cars on an underpass and collided with a southbound car piloted by Richard Fleisher of Scotia. Carmine is charged with negligent homicide, an offense punishable by a year's imprisonment in the county jail or three years in a state prison. Justice of the Peace Frank Niskey set bail at $2000 cash or $4000 property bond. A coroner's jury Tuesday night recommended that the driver be held for further investigation. Bouncing off the left end of the Fleisher car, the Carmine machine catapulted Heney from its interior and then rolled over him, killing the youth instantly. Carmine, thrown from the car as it overturned five times while rolling 150 feet, suffered a superficial scalp cut as he landed against some rocks alongside the road. Heney, a chauffeur for Mrs. May Rushmore of Eureka, and who formerly worked in Santa Rosa and San Francisco, was a graduate of the Eureka high school. He had lived 10 years in Eureka. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy C. Heney of Fortuna; four brothers, Archie, William, Joseph and Guy Heney Jr., all of Fortuna; two sisters, Mrs. Marian Shields of Bear River and Margaret Heney of Fortuna; several aunts and uncles. Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon in a Eureka chapel by the Rev. R. D. Douglas of Ferndale. Interment was in Myrtle Grove cemetery. Contributor: Karen Hendricks (47322391)
