Bobby was born on August 16, 1937, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and was the third son of the late Horace Lee Babson, Sr. and Cuerth (Gantt) Babson. He graduated from Chicora High School in 1957. He briefly served in the United States Army Reserves. Bobby was a talented tenor singer and took his voice lessons from the Charleston legend Dubose Robinson. After graduating from Chicora High School in 1957, Bobby was the recipient of the Converse College Music Scholarship and briefly attended Furman University in Greenville, SC. While at Furman, he was a member of the Furman Singers. After briefly attending Furman College away from home, Bobby moved back to Charleston. He worked at the Reynolds Men’s Store at Gas Light Shopping Center in North Charleston, SC. He also continued his voice lessons with Dubose Robinson. While working at Reynolds Men’s Store, he met Joyce Ann Smith (Babson, then Blackwell). Bobby and Joyce courted and dated and were married in 1962. They amicably divorced in March 1995. In 1964, the same year as the birth of Joyce and Bobby’s first daughter, Carissa Ann (Babson) Snyder, Bobby entered Civil Service and began working first at the Naval Weapons Depot in Goose Creek, SC and then at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. While working he attended night classes at the Baptist College of Charleston (now Charleston Southern University) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Accounting at the Baptist College. While working a temporary assignment at the Alameda Air Station, in San Francisco, CA, he attended more night classes and earned a Master's Degree from Central Michigan University. Bobby had an amazing voice and was well known in the local church choir circles for his beautiful tenor voice. Over the years he was an active member of several local Charleston church choirs including North Bridge Baptist Church (West Ashley), the First Baptist Church of North Charleston (Rivers Avenue). Citadel Square Baptist Church in downtown Charleston SC and Grace United Methodist Church on Sam Rittenbury Blvd. Bobby loved assisting with music performances especially at Christmas and Easter church services. They could expect a packed church when Bobby, John Hutto, David Joyner and Jeannie Joyner and other “famous” choir voices were performing Christmas music specials or The Messiah. Bobby’s favorite song to sing was "The Holy City." In 1993 Bobby retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was a Budget Comptroller at the Naval Supply Center BLDG 198. During his time at Naval Supply Center, Bobby received several "Gallon Blood Donor" awards as a blood donor during the many Red Cross blood drives held at BLDG 198 Naval Supply Center from the 70s until his retirement in 1993. Bobby loved Citadel football and the Charleston Riverdogs and especially enjoyed chocolate covered cherries. The children in the Brentwood neighborhood always loved New Years Eve and July 4th celebrations, because Bobby spared no expense in firecrackers and bottle rockets. Bobby also loved attending wrestling matches at the old Charleston County Hall. Bobby was predeceased by his two brothers, Horace Lee "H.L." Babson, Jr. and Scott Harvin Babson Sr. Per his final wishes, Bobby was cremated at Stuhr's Funeral Home, Charleston SC and his ashes spread over the graves of his parents Horace Lee Babson Sr and Cuerth (Gantt) Babson at Carolina Memorial Gardens, Charleston SC. Therefore, he is "technically" buried there. The burial information was updated to Carolina Memorial Gardens despite cremation so as to ease search options for all Babson's in South Carolina.
