Rodney Farke officiated and burial was in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk. Military rites were conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644 of Norfolk. Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton was in charge of arrangements. He died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton following complications caused by emphysema. The son of Walter and Stella (Wright) Abler was born April 27, 1933, in Pierce. He attended school in Pierce, then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951. He served with the Third Amtrac Battalion, First Marine Division during the Korean War until his discharge in 1954. For his service in the military, he received the Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Medal. Following his return to Norfolk, he began working as a truck driver for Abler Transfer Inc. and later became a company salesman. On August 20, 1960, in Norfolk he married Marlene Raabe. The couple moved to Yankton in 1962, where he was active in service organizations including the VFW, Sertoma, Jaycees and Elks Club. Mr. Abler was a member of the Knights of Columbus, third and forth degree. He served as past flotilla commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a member of the Gavins Point Yacht Club. Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Tami and Scott Blackburn of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one son and his wife, Todd and Del Rae of Crofton; his mother of Pierce; three brothers, Mark, Paul and Leon, all of Norfolk; five sisters, Delores Theisen of Osmond, Marilyn Crabbe and Elizabeth Miller both of Norfolk, Kathryn Voecks of Pierce and Lois Ann Weber of Bancroft, Iowa; four grandsons and two step-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, his father and one brother. Memorials are directed to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 791 of Yankton or St. Benedict Parish in Yankton.
