Robert John Black was born July 26, 1926 at Blencoe, Iowa, the son of Homer and Lucille (Hime) Black. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from November 27, 1944 to November 6, 1946, in the Pacific Theater. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan. Black, 86, of Onawa Iowa, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa. Robert John Black was born July 26, 1926 at Blencoe, Iowa, the son of Homer and Lucille (Hime) Black. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from November 27, 1944 to November 6, 1946, in the Pacific Theater. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan. After the service, Robert and Mavis Jensen were united in marriage at the First Christian Church in Onawa on October 31, 1948. Three children were born to this union, Diane, Jim, and Susan. Robert was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Onawa, the Western Iowa Sheep Association, and the American Legion David McNeill Post #129 of Onawa. He served as a 4-H leader. Farming and raising sheep gave him great joy. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and woodworker. Robert and Mavis entered Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting in February 2012. Survivors include his children, Diane and husband Leo Benjamin of Whiting, IA, Jim and wife Mary Black of Onawa, IA, and Susan and husband Charles Grabeal of Hammon, OK; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five siblings and their spouses, Darlene and Ed Ferris of Blair, NE, Betty and Lee Hileman of San Jose, CA, Donna and Ralph Wickersham of Turin, IA, Ed and Janice Black of Sloan, IA, and Dick and Mary Black of Onawa, IA; a sister-in-law, Virginia Black of Auburn, WA; and his long-time companion, Tippy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis; his parents, Homer and Lucille Black; and two brothers, Gene and Don Black. Obituary & Photo is from The Rush Family Care Service
