Robert John Poppens, age 75, of Aplington, Iowa, was born October 12, 1933, the son of Siefert and Okeline (Muntinga) Poppens, near Austinville, Iowa. He attended grade school at Austinville and later graduated from Aplington High School in 1951. Bob grew up on the family farm near Ackley and continued working on the farm until being drafted to the United States Army on August 3, 1955. While in the service, Bob was stationed at Fort Knox and later in Budigan, Germany. He was honorably discharged on June 1, 1957. Bob met the love of his life while roller-skating in 1959. He was united in marriage to Bernadine Janssen on March 5, 1960, at the Methodist Church in Floyd, Iowa. To this union, six children were raised. The couple made their home on a farm near Parkersburg where they have lived since 1966. Bob was a member of the Aplington Lion's Club and also a lifelong member of the Kesley Amvets. He taught Sunday School, was part of the Willing Workers, delivered meals on wheels and faithfully delivered church bulletins to Maple Manor. He loved farming, working at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home for over 20 years, antique tractor rides, and traveling with Bernie to all parts of the world. Bob and Bernie had just returned from a recent trip to Egypt on April 14, 2009. Perhaps one of his greatest joys was time spent with his grandchildren, especially giving them tractor rides when they came to visit. He will be missed at all of the local coffee seminars in the area. Bob died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Bernie of 49 years; six children, Anthony (Carma) Poppens of Aplington, Iowa, Kyle, Tessa and Chelsea; Sue (friend Minette) Poppens of Allen, Texas and Brennan; Beth (Mark) Nunge of Coralville, Iowa, Rebecca, Jack, Jessie, Bobby and Joey; Tom (Brenda) Poppens of Aplington, Iowa, Amanda, Lindsey, Rachel and Shane; Dawn (Ryan) Crabb of Des Moines, Iowa, Keegan and Levi; Sara (Matt) Jacobson of Waterloo, Iowa, Gabe and Luke; one brother, Don (Marilyn) Poppens of Ackley, Iowa; one sister, Betty Ehlers of Laverne, Minnesota. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 27, 2009, at the First Reformed Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the First Reformed Church in Aplington and continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
