He passed away on May 9, 2011, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 85.Robert was born in Dunlap, Iowa, and baptized in Christ at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa, on May 10, 1959, and confirmed there on May 17, 1959, by Rev. Otto Schlegelmilch. Bob graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1943. He was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan from March 1944 to May 1946. Upon discharge from the service, Bob returned to Charter Oak where he and his father purchased a blacksmith shop.On September 24, 1961, he was united in marriage to Marcella Schleis, his wife of 46 years. At this time, Bob purchased the Champlin Gas Station in Charter Oak which he operated until 1980. Bob then worked for several gas stations in Denison until his retirement. His beloved wife, Marcella, passed away on July 19, 2008.Bob was a member of the American Legion, a volunteer fireman, a city councilman, and served two terms as mayor of Charter Oak.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marcella; and one sister, Viola. Those remaining to forever cherish his memory are his stepdaughters: Carol and her husband Ed; and Myra and her husband Gary; three stepgranddaughters: Debbie and her husband, Kevin; Michelle and her husband, Joseph; Holly and her husband, Matt; stepgrandchildren: Trey, Minden, Joshua, Brooklyn, Leah, Madeline and Colin; one brother Bill; two stepsisters: Mary Ellen and Jayne; one stepbrother, Tom; other relatives and friends.
