Description	:	Robert Joseph Whites was born May 9, 1947 in Huron, South Dakota. The son of Hugh and Evelyn Whites. He graduated from Iroquois High School in 1965 and attended Huron College until May 1968. He entered the US Army Sept. 16, 1968. He took basic training and AIT training at Ft. Lewis Wash. Robert went to Vietnam in Feb. 4, 1969 where he was attached to the 175th Aviation Co. (assault helicopter) on Feb. 15 he was assigned as a door gunner. The son of Hugh and Evelyn Whites. He graduated from Iroquois High School in 1965 and attended Huron College until May 1968. He entered the US Army Sept. 16, 1968. He took basic training and AIT training at Ft. Lewis Wash. Robert went to Vietnam in Feb. 4, 1969 where he was attached to the 175th Aviation Co. (assault helicopter) on Feb. 15 he was assigned as a door gunner. Specialist Four Whites was Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously for action on July 24, 1969. He spotted several sampans. Finding it necessary to get a better look they hovered around the area just above the sampans. Several enemy were spotted and he immediately took them under fire. As the aircraft commander maneuvered the ship around, he fearlessly kept up a deadly accurate flow of fire to keep the enemy pinned down. Without warning his ship set off a booby trapped bomb which resulted in his death. Specialist Whites conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary heroism and intrepidity at the cost of his own life, showed great devotion to duty. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. Prior to his death, he had been awarded the Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze service star, Vietnam campaign ribbon, Aircraft Crewman badge, Expert Badge with the machine gun and automatic rifle bars, and the Sharpshooter Badge with rifle bar.
