Description	:	Robert J. Krause of Fenton passed away peacefully while surrounded by family at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Death was very shortly after a bedside last rites service on Sunday, June 12th at 7:45 in the evening. The visitation will be Friday, June 17th at 9:30 AM and the funeral will be at 11 AM the same day. Both will be at St. John's Lutheran Church in Fenton, Iowa. Robert was born on June 7th, 1922, in Fenton Iowa to Arthur J and Mabel (Dreyer) Krause. While in school he helped his grandfather with farming chores and graduated from Fenton High School in 1939. Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor he briefly attended Iowa State University and managed the lumber yard in Armstrong. He decided to join the Marines in the autumn of 1942. After Boot Camp, he was assigned as a radioman in an anti-aircraft battalion the Second Marine Division and travelled to many points in the Pacific. His tour of duty culminated in his participation in the fiercely fought battle of Tinian against Japanese forces in the Pacific theater during World War II. He spent the rest of the war on the island waiting for the main invasion of Japan. His tent was about a mile from the airstrip where the Enola Gay took off to drop the first atom bomb at Hiroshima to end the war. While on the island he was the topic of a widely reported reunion of several service members, all from Fenton, that happened to be in the area of Tinian. This included his brother Herbert, Ervin Votteler and a few others. Immediately after the war he returned to farm the family farm in Independence Township, Palo Alto County, until his retirement during the Farm Crisis in 1982. He raised corn and beans as well as a variety of animals to include pure-bred Yorkshire pigs, cattle and various wild-fowl. Shortly after the war he met his future wife, Rachel (Weisbrod) Krause while selling magazines door-to-door in Fenton. They married on January 16th, 1949 and were together until Rachel passed away in 2014 - 65 short years after their wedding. He was active in several organizations including the American Legion (71 years), the Democratic Party and St. John's Lutheran Church in Fenton. He also had service as a member of the Sentral Community Schools School Board, the Lott's Creek Drainage Ditch Board, and as a Trustee of Independence Township for many years. He is preceded in death by this mother and father, his wife Rachel, his sister Irene Krause Alt Zumach, his brother Herbert, and his step-brother Hans Krause. He is also preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Spicer. He is survived by Robert A. Krause (Vicky) of Fairfield, Anne Swift (Don) of Yankton South Dakota, Alice Spicer (Rex) of Solon, Iowa, and John Krause (Kelly) of San Diego. Grandchildren are Elizabeth Swift Thomas (William), Rebecca Swift, Laurel Krause, Janelle Krause, Steve Troeh (Kelly) and Sarah Troeh Morgan (Shawn). There are also eleven great grandchildren, Quinn Culhane, Logan Culhane, William Thomas, Charles Thomas, Isaac Abu Dagga, Zayne Morgan, Hanadi Morgan, Asia Morgan, Mia Morgan, Sarina Troeh and Timothy Troeh. Flowers can be sent to Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona, or directly to the church in Fenton. Gifts in lieu of flowers can be sent to the local American Legion past - Ranney- Weisbrod Post 671 in Fenton, Iowa 50539.
