Description	:	Robert Kenneth “Bob” Wallen was born July 10th, 1920 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the second son (seventh child) born to Orville Preston and Laura Grace (Stevens) Wallen. At the time of his birth, his father worked in a cabinet shop, did dray work part time, and worked for Bob’s grandfather as a framing carpenter building homes for the Woods Brothers. At the time of his birth, his father worked in a cabinet shop, did dray work part time, and worked for Bob’s grandfather as a framing carpenter building homes for the Woods Brothers. In 1921, the family relocated to a farm 1-1/2 miles east of Malcolm, Nebraska, where they were tenant famers for the Fellwock family. Bob worked with his father on the farm and attended Malcolm school. In 1934, at the height of the severe drought, his father and mother retired and moved to the Belmont area of Lincoln along with the younger children. Bob graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School. After high school, Bob worked at Jacobs Service at 27th and Cornhusker Highway. There, Bob began his training as an auto mechanic. In 1942, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and attended basic training and aircraft maintenance school at Buckley Airfield in Denver, Colorado. Bob was then deployed to the Galapagos Islands where he served as a mechanic for planes patrolling the Pacific for enemy submarines to provide protection for the Panama Canal. After his assignment in the Galapagos Islands, Bob, by then a Staff Sergeant, returned to Colorado and was released from service at the end of the war. After the War, Bob worked for auto companies in Lincoln, including Kaar Service, as an engine mechanic. In 1947, Bob married Margaret Bartzett, who was a local girl from the Belmont area. Bob and Margaret would become the parents of three boys, Robert Bruce, Stephen Kent, and William Preston. In 1951, Bob joined the Goodyear family and remained there until his retirement in 1985. While at Goodyear, Bob was actively involved in Union activities (see article below), The below article appeared in the October 1993 edition of The Spotlight, a publication of Local 286 of the United Rubber Workers Union. The Nebraska State AFL-CIO has recently created the Labor Leader’s Hall of Fame. Earlier this year a notice was sent to all local unions affiliated with the State AFL-CIO that each organization was entitled to submit one name for consideration to the Nebraska State AFL-CIO Executive Board to be a recipient of the award. At that time, the intention was to present the award to one living recipient and two who were deceased. Twelve names were submitted. When the State Executive Board reviewed the list of names and resumes that were submitted, they realized how futile it was to try to determine which three were outstanding. A resolution to make all twelve recipients of this award was presented and passed at the 30th Bi-Annual Constitutional Convention held in Kearney in September. One of this year’s inductees into the Labor Leader’s Hall of Fame is retired URW Local 286 past Vice President, Bob Wallen. Robert K. Wallen began his employment at Goodyear on December 26, 1951. During his years of service, he was elected steward, chief steward, served as Skilled Trades chairman and was elected Vice President of Local 286 in 1966. Also included in his accomplishments was time served on the URW District 4 Executive Board, serving as a member of the Southeast Nebraska Health Board and time spent on the Nebraska State AFL-CIO Executive Board from 1966 until 1985. Bob received the Al Bauer Award presented by the Lincoln Central Labor Union in January 1977. He was the ﬁrst elected Senior Senator of the Silver Haired Unicameral in l980-1981. Bob retired from Goodyear on June 28th, 1985, after 34 years of service. He was a great union leader for the United Rubber Workers, Local 286. He was active in politics and the health and welfare of Goodyear Employees, locally, state- wide and for the URW International Union. Bob has three sons now working for Goodyear: Steve. Bruce and Bill. We would like to extend our congratulations to Bob on receiving this award. Not only are we proud that one of our own will take his rightful place in the Labor Leader’s Hall of Fame, but we are extremely grateful for all of Bob‘s contributions to the growth and wellbeing of our union. His hard work and service to this union was made without the thought of reward, which makes this award all the more deserved.
