Bourne, 67, of Ames, Iowa, passed away on Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave., Ames. A memorial for music education in Iowa is being set up in his memory. Robert L. Bourne was born July 23, 1933, in Ames, the son of Everett and Martha Zoe (Wilson) Bourne. He received a bachelor of arts degree in music from the University of Northern Iowa and a master of arts degree in music education from the University of Northern Colorado. He was a band director in Charles City, Audubon and Rockwell. After retirement he continued to teach at St. Cecilia Parochial School and continued judging instrumental music competitions. Robert was united in marriage to Marjorie Thompson on Dec. 19, 1955. He served as president of Southwest Iowa Bandmasters Association and founded the SWIBA Sight-Reading Clinic and was presented the Karl L. King distinguished service award for (active) member in 1993, 1994 and 1995. He was a member of the American School Band Directors Association, the National Band Masters Association, the Iowa Band Masters Association, the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and various local organizations. He was a devoted bandmaster. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Ames; two daughters, Barb Christensen and her husband, John, of Middleton, Wis., and Kathy Musser and her husband, Marty, of Madrid; one son, Jeff Bourne and his wife, Kris, of Woodbridge, Va.; one sister, Judy Thomas, of Ames; six grandchildren, Samantha and Elizabeth Bourne, Kelci and Tyler Christensen and Jacob and Abigail Musser.
