Gust, son of Jacob and Louise (Hiller) Gust, passed away peacefully at his home in Vancouver, Washington, October 26, 2021, surrounded by his three children, at the age of 95. Bob was born October 24, 1926 in Lind, Washington, and was a Vancouver resident since early childhood. During World War II, at the age of 17, Bob enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet. At the conclusion of the War, he returned home and attended college while working various jobs. In 1949, Bob joined the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) before being called back to active duty service during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Bob returned to Vancouver where he met the love of his life, Delores. The two were married in 1952 and had three wonderful children; sons, Lynn and Mike; and daughter, Julie. Bob remained with the Vancouver Police Department in Vancouver, Washington and rose through the ranks_retiring in 1978 as Captain and Patrol Division Commander for the VPD. Never one to sit still, Bob jumped back into the workforce and became a Deputy U.S. Marshall in 1980, holding that role until fully retiring in 1994. Bob was incredibly generous and thoughtful of others, staying involved in the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed bird hunting, particularly with his host of friends including those from the police department. Bob began dabbling in the stock market in the '90s; those around him wished they had followed suit on his early picks for Apple and Tesla. Bob was also a skilled craftsman, building essential and detailed pieces with masterful workmanship. He remained ever-curious and invited new challenges, always asking "how could I improve this?" and succeeding time and time again. As part of the Greatest Generation, Bob pursued his life with a service mentality, always putting others first. He was loved and admired by so many and will be deeply missed by those who knew him. It is no stretch to say that there had never been a negative word said about Bob, for good reason. He will be remembered for his integrity, thoughtfulness and kind heart. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; sister, Wanda; and brother, Ralph. His beautiful life and memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Published in The Columbian, Vancouver, Washington on November 7, 2021.
