Robert L. Miller was born November 28, 1922, at Stanton, Nebraska, to John (Jack) and Viola Hanff. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stanton in February of 1923. At the age of two, upon the death of their birth parents, Robert and his twin brother, Russel J. Miller, were adopted by aunt and uncle Sadie and Chris Miller, and moved to Pilger. Robert became a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Pilger, being confirmed in 1936. He attended Pilger Public Schools, graduating in 1941. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in January of 1943. He served in Germany as a medic, earning five battle stars: Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes Battle of the Bulge, and Central Europe. He served personally under General George Patton. He was discharged in December of 1945. He married Ada Minnie Chace of Pilger in May of 1946. They were the parents of two children: Ron Lou and Gale. Ada Minnie died in 1968. He married Arlene Krutz of Pilger in April of 1976. Bob and Russ operated Miller's Food Market in Pilger for more than 40 years. As the ancestor of Pilger's founder, John Peter Pilger, Bob served on the Pilger Fire Department for many years including chief, and chairman of the village board of Pilger for nearly 20 years. Bob was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, serving on its church council, was a member of the Stanton V.F.W. Post #3602 and Pilger American Legion Post #69. An avid Husker fan, he never missed a home game for the past 20 years. He died November 15, 2010, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in West Point, 13 days short of his 88th birthday after battling many health issues. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife. Survivors include wife Arlene of Pilger; son Ron Lou and wife Marcy Miller of Lincoln; daughter Gale Miller of Friend and special friend Tim Kelly of Omaha; stepchildren and spouses Deryl and Jolene Krutz of Golden, Missouri; Kathy and Leon Portrey of Glenwood, Iowa; Kim and Dan Molacek, Kris and Mike Unger, all of Stanton; Kelli and Al Guenther of West Point; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother Russ Miller of Pilger.
