Schmit was born February 28, 1958 in Friend, Nebraska to Paul and Doris (Horan) Schmit, the second of six children and passed away suddenly Friday, June 16, 2017, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in York at the age of 59. Schmit was born February 28, 1958 in Friend, Nebraska to Paul and Doris (Horan) Schmit, the second of six children and passed away suddenly Friday, June 16, 2017, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in York at the age of 59. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing. As a young boy, Robert attended grade school in Beaver Crossing and was a 1976 graduate of Centennial Public School in Utica. “Petty”, as he was affectionately nicknamed, worked for DuTeau Chevrolet, Lincoln and Hughes Brothers, Seward. For a couple of summers, he and his Uncle Jim, mined turquoise and silver in Nevada. Petty worked for Geis Steel Tech Inc with Dave Geis and traveled all over the United States, welding stainless steel tubing. He also was employed with Earth Stove in Waco until an injury left him unable to continue his work there. Petty loved fishing, especially at Table Rock Lake in Missouri. He also loved to tinker and could fix just about anything, from cars to lawn mowers. He loved to visit and share experiences with everyone. Petty had the gift of a wonderful extended vocabulary and he loved to stretch the knowledge of others by using unusual words for common items. Petty enjoyed volunteering and assisting with Legion activities as a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Beaver Crossing. He survived by his sons, Shane Gorey, Joshua and Misty Kraft,; three grandchildren, Curtis, Jenna, Sara, brothers and sisters and their spouses, Rodger Schmit and Debra McCartney, Donna and James Waegli, Mary and Dennis Coufal, Shirley and Denver Beetem, Don and Becky Schmit, several nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the American Legion Club in Beaver Crossing with Don “Hawk” Kramer officiating. A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Beaver Crossing. The following has been contributed by Marilyn Sanner Keim: YORK – A two vehicle accident Friday at the intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 34, north of York claimed the life of a Gresham man. According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, a westbound white pickup driven by Robert Schmit of Gresham, failed to stop at the intersection and was hit by a northbound semi-trailer hauling a combine around 5 p.m. Schmit was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The semi instantly burst into flames. The driver of the semi was not injured. His name was not released.
