Description	:	Bob was born in Fremont to James Martin and Martha Henrietta Kruger Hutchinson. His father left the family when he was an early teen. Martha then married Jesse James Cole and Bob, Jimmie, and Marie fondly called him "Pop". Bob was educated in the Fremont public schools. As a youth, "Hutch" loved roller skating and playing the trumpet. He played in the Fremont High School band and Vasholz Comedian Band. He graduated in 1943 from Fremont High School. His father left the family when he was an early teen. Martha then married Jesse James Cole and Bob, Jimmie, and Marie fondly called him "Pop". Bob was educated in the Fremont public schools. As a youth, "Hutch" loved roller skating and playing the trumpet. He played in the Fremont High School band and Vasholz Comedian Band. He graduated in 1943 from Fremont High School. "Babe" (as his Mom and siblings called him) was blinded in one eye by a dog bite as a toddler, but he was so eager to serve his country that he memorized the eye chart to pass the physical. He then joined the United States Merchant Marine Corp. Dad served aboard the "SS Joliet", "SS Antiqua", "SS Howell Lykes", and "MS American Packer" ships, and traveled through at least 35 of the states, around the world by ship to several war areas, Canada, five voyages to the Marshall Islands, eleven to the Hawaiian Islands, also to the Caroline Islands, Philippine Islands, New Guinea in the Pacific, Gibralter, Italy, Sicily, North Africa, Chile and Panama in South America. During the invasion of Leyte in the Phillipine Islands his ship underwent 97 air raids. He told his family his most interesting experience was in Brinisni, Italy where he and his ship's crew celebrated V-E Day. Letters between he and his brother, Jimmie, state when the war was over they were going to start a moving company. They were very close and there are many letters back and forth to each other. While home on leave, he married his high school sweetheart, Gerry Siercks, August 5, 1944. She lived with her mother and father while Bob was in the service. Sadly, only in a letter from Gerry, did he learn of his brother's ("Sarge" as he had recently nicknamed him) death, November 26, 1944. He returned from the war in 1945 and in 1946 Bob and Gerry had their first daughter. They also purchased their first home. Approximately two years later Dad decided to move the little family to Gardiner, Oregon where he drove a logging truck in the mountains. His Uncle Carl and Aunt Mabel also lived in Oregon and a lot of time was spent with them. I guess Dad and Mom were homesick, because we returned to Fremont a couple of years later. Dad, Mom, and I moved into a little house behind Grandma and Grandpa Siercks' home on West Military. Grandpa had built the little house, but I see that it burned down just a few years ago. I remember happy times of card games, and the first time Dad had me try coffee! I didn't like it and have never drank it since. I am unsure what job Dad was holding then, and my first recollection is of the station on 23rd and Bell Streets, where the entrance to the Fremont Mall is now. He sold fireworks during July and used to light "Cherry Bombs" and throw them in the garage at home. He always was a prankster and used to tease us kids a lot! I believe his next job was with the Mobil Oil Company, and he drove a bulk truck for them. The bulk plant was on 1st and Union Streets, and Joe Donahoe's station was in front of the plant. I spent a lot of time there when I got to go with Dad on the truck. We lived at 408 West Linden when my sister was born.
