LeRoy Seiple, 25, Jewell, well-known throughout northwestern Ohio as the high scoring center of the Jewell Oils, semi-pro basketball team died at 6:1 a.m. today in Defiance hospital. He was injured at 4:20 a.m. when his 1938 Studebaker coach rolled over three or four times on leaving U.S. highway 24 near the top of the hill at Independence, about three miles east of Defiance. Besides the fracture at the base of the skull, he suffered a broken nose and multiple cuts and bruises over most of his body. His car was east bound, state highway patrolmen of Defiance sub-station said. It appeared that the Studebaker left the right berm as he went over the crest of the hill. The machine careened along a ditch, hit a lane and then started rolling patrolmen said. The car was demolished at an estimated loss of $680. Several men fishing nearby in the Maumee river, heard the crash. They were the first persons on the scene. They called state highway patrolmen and a Defiance physician. Seiple was given first aid and then taken to the hospital here in Mansfield's ambulance. Mr. Seiple had been working at Ye Olde Tavern in Florida. He left there about an hour earlier. Relatives believed he had come to Defiance and was en route back to Jewell at the time of the accident. The body is to remain at the Mansfield funeral home until Monday morning. It will be taken to the Independence Methodist church about noon, where friends may call prior to the services at 1 p.m. in the church. Rev. Jay Hornish will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Seiple was born in Jewell, Dec. 22, 1913, and had lived there all his life. He was graduated from Jewell high school in 1931. He played basketball four years in the Jewell school. He was a member of Jewell's county championship team of 1930. Following graduation, he played center with the Jewell Oil Co., semi-pro team until it broke up a year ago. During the past season, he played with the Florida Sinclare team. He was associated with his brother Edward, in the operation of Seiple Brothers filling station in Jewell. Since 1934, he had driven one of the North Richland township school buses. He is survived by his father, Robert G. Seiple, Jewell; two brothers, Edward and Gale, both of Jewell; two sisters, Mrs. Berniece Ritchie, Detroit, and Mrs. Loretta Sleesman, Edgerton, and three half-brothers, Kenneth and Carrol and Darrol, twins, who make their home with their grandmother, Mrs. Laville Feeney, South Clinton Street. His mother died 18 years ago and a step-mother 10 years ago. He had been making his home with an aunt, Mrs. Della Ramus, Jewell.
