He may have thought that the USA 4th of July Celebrations were really a fireworks show in his honor! Robert's parents are Charles Cagle, Jr. and Sarah Yow. There is one oral family story that I heard: It is a tradition that Robert Lindsey Cagle was in the Battle of Fort Fisher on the coast of North Carolina, and it is understood that he lost one of his legs during that fight. On July 3rd, 1864 Robert would have turned 16 years old, and if he then enlisted it would have been in the late part of the War Between the States. More research is needed to determine if he in fact was involved during the Civil War, and was a fighting soldier? Or was he too young to be on the front lines of battle? No matter how he lost his leg it one point that everyone does agree on, and it is that he only had one good leg. Robert is married twice, and he does have children by both wives. His first wife is Francis "Fannie" Carolyn Robins who was born on November 24, 1850, and she died on December 6, 1902. Fannie is buried at the Meadow Creek Primative Baptist Church Cemetery. Robert and Fannie were married on October 24, 1869 by J.W. Morton, J.P., and Robert would have turned 21 years old. Their weeding was only 4 years after The War was over, and he had to live with one leg as a adult. One family story is that he was able to get a job as the U.S. mail deliveryman, and he was able to ride a horse or ride in a buggy pulled by a horse. Robert was at the age of 55 years old by his wedding date of October 4, 1903 to his 2nd wife Mary Magdalene Blackwelder who was 34 years old on their wedding date. They were blessed to have two daughters, but the is the only two children that they had together. Their marital joy together was only a brief five (5) years, because one of the stories that I heard says that on his last day he was delivering mail as usual and he was riding a horse (another story has him riding in a buggy pulled by a horse). There are two stories, and yet they both agree on the fact that the lighting spooked the horse. This caused the horse to over react, and the result was that Robert fell down breaking his neck. The injury was the end of his life, and he died on October 19, 1908. The adult children by Robert's first wife were able to take care of the funeral arrangements, and they selected that Robert would be buried beside their mother at the Meadow Creek Primative Baptist Church. Family history is forever being changed by births and deads in each family, because the survivors have to go on to live although with the separation. It was another 50 years for Robert's 2nd wife Mary Magdalene Blackwelder, because she died on June 11, 1958. Additionally, Mary Magdalene Blackwelder was married to a 3rd husband, and he was the brother of Robert too! The 3rd husband was James Adams "Jim" Cagle, but they did not have any children together though.
