He was born August 25, 1921, in Geneva, Ohio, the son of George and Maude (Wharram) Walter. Mr. Walter started his career as a banker and then became a 1st Mate Helmsman on oar boats on the Great Lakes. Read More	July 16, 2011 Robert L. Walter Star Beacon GENEVA — Robert L. Walter, age 89, of Jackson St., Mentor, Ohio, died Thursday, July 14, 2011, at Geneva Pointe Nursing Home in Geneva, Ohio. He was born August 25, 1921, in Geneva, Ohio, the son of George and Maude (Wharram) Walter. Mr. Walter started his career as a banker and then became a 1st Mate Helmsman on oar boats on the Great Lakes. Because of his ability as a helmsman, the U.S. Navy drafted him during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Following the service, he worked for Local 17 Iron Workers and worked on various tall buildings in the area until his retirement. He was an active member of Faith Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School. He enjoyed bible studies and he and his wife had a ministry going to various nursing homes in the area. He also enjoyed archeology and coin collecting. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jeffery Briggs; a brother, Bart Walter; and a sister, Frances Scrimshaw. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 19th, at the Geneva Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 323 S. Broadway, Geneva, Ohio, with Pastor James Lane, of Faith Baptist Church of Perry, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with VFW Geneva Post #6846 conducting Military Rites. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday and from 10 a.m. until time of Service, Tuesday, at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to Harbor Light Hospice, Faith Baptist Church or to Geneva Pointe Nursing Home Activity Fund.
