Visitation will be 6-7:00 p.m. Thursday at the church, with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Rev. Fr. Albert Cizewski will celebrate the mass. Robert passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, at Avera-St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen at the age of 83. Robert M. Sommers was born November 25, 1929, at Eden, SD to Louis and Elizabeth (Steiner) Sommers. He attended school at Eden. On February 25, 1950, Robert entered the U. S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged February 27, 1953. On June 25, 1955, Robert married Diane Mondry at Grenville, SD. They lived for a short period of time in Minnesota where Robert worked as a federal poultry inspector. They returned to the Eden area where he fed livestock, trucked, farmed and custom hayed for many years. He also enjoyed hunting deer, fishing, playing cards and visiting his children and grandchildren. Robert was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. He also belonged to the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 57 years, six months and 13 days, Diane Sommers of Eden; his five children: Wayne Sommers of Alpine, CA; Rick (Myra) Sommers of Aberdeen; Camille (Bill) Thomas of Independence, MN; Craig (Melanie) Sommers of Aberdeen; Staci (Sia Emami) Sommers of Maple Grove, MN; nine grandchildren: Jared Sommers, Robert Sommers, Danielle Van Der Zee; Christopher Sommers; Alex Thomas, Morgan Thomas, Spencer Sommers, Dylan Sommers, Matthew Emami; a brother, James Sommers and two sisters: Doris Squillace and Helen Kosowski. Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers and a sister.
