Born Dec. 31, 1921, in Malden, Mass., son of the late Robert M. and Louise (Goddard) Smith, he resided in Alton Bay for the past 25 years, having come from Malden, Mass. A United States Naval Veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion. Bob was employed as an HVAC technician for 40 years, having retired from Morton Glendale Oil in Malden, Mass. During his retirement, he kept busy with canvas work, making boat tops, doing upholstery and furniture, and was a real handyman. He was a member of Teamsters Local 25 of Boston, Mass., and a member of the former Lions Club in Alton. An active member of Winnipesaukee Masonic Lodge No. 75 of Alton and Shriners Bektash Temple of Concord, Bob drove families to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital in Springfield, Mass., and to the Shriners Burn Institute in Boston, Mass., and he drove Shriners Mini Cars at parades. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Shirley F. (Niland) Smith of Alton Bay; a daughter, Mabel, and husband Brian Given of Medford, Mass.; a son, Thomas, and wife Jane Leach of Medford, Mass.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Leach of North Andover, Mass.; and three sisters, Doris Shellenbarger, June Place and Elva Clay. He was predeceased by a son, Glenn F. Leach of North Andover, Mass., and a grandson, Glenn F. Leach Jr. of Arlington, Mass. Calling hours are Sunday, Sept. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School St., Alton, with a Masonic Service at 6 p.m. A Funeral Service will be on Monday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Alton Masonic Temple, Route 28S in Alton, with Rev. Dwight V. Meader officiating. Interment will follow at New Riverside Cemetery in Alton.
