Description	:	Co-founder of the Lancaster Lumber Co. Robert M. Giesy, Sr. (1871-1939), youngest child of seven born to Daniel & Ellen Giesy, married Mabel Wolfe in 1897. By 1901 Robert and two brothers were involved in the lumber business and opened a "large lumber plant" in Columbus. Robert was in charge of the Lancaster office. The Gazette (29 March 1901) reported the Robert Giesy family was waiting on W. B. Henry to finish their brick house on N. High so they could move in. By 1901 Robert and two brothers were involved in the lumber business and opened a "large lumber plant" in Columbus. Robert was in charge of the Lancaster office. The 1902 city directory listed Robert and Mabel Giesy living in the home on the NE corner of High and Fifth Ave. By 1909 the family included five children and contractor J. D. Van Gundy was adding two rooms and a back porch to their home. Imagine how grand it must have looked. Robert's grandfather John U. Giesy had built a house in the 1850s south of Lancaster on what is now B.I.S. Road. Beginning in June 1913 if not before, Robert's family would close up their hot "city residence" in the spring and move down to their beautiful country farm called Edgewood. In the fall they moved back into their town house at 504 N. High St. Mrs. Mabel Giesy died in May 1924 and Robert Giesy, Sr. remarried Marie Zeller from Putnam Co. in Aug. 1925. She invited women to their N. High St. home April 3, 1929, and that group launched the Lancaster Branch of the Needlework Guild of America. Robert Giesy, Sr. 68 died July 8, 1939 in the Lancaster Hospital. He was survived by his wife, a son, and three daughters. In 1941 the house at 504 N. High St. was sold "out of the family" when it was 40 years of age. Mrs. Marie Giesy moved to 411 E. Fifth and lived there until her death in 1963.
