Read More	LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Robert Martin Pruckler, a resident of Grand Island from 1948 to 1975 and again from 1986 to 1995, died on Dec. 25, 2014, in Lakewood, Colo., following a short illness. Robert was born to Austrian immigrants Rupertus and Elisabeth Kirschner Pruckler in Oelwein, Iowa, on June 3, 1919. He studied life science at the University of Iowa, intending to go to medical school. But those plans were set aside with the onset of World War II, which prompted him to enlist in the United States Navy. Robert attained the rank of lieutenant commander during his naval service, making him a commanding officer on the troop transport ship “The Herald of the Morning,” a vessel that collected troops from the island of Iwo Jima in March 1945. Robert was aboard this ship as she triumphantly steamed home through the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco one month later in April 1945. After the war Robert moved to Grand Island, where he was involved in the business of raising and selling fresh chickens. It was here he met Margaret Ann Riley. She caught his eye each week in St. Mary’s Cathedral because she wore a tall feather in her hat and always arrived late. They were married in that cathedral in 1950 and together produced five children, all of whom were raised in Grand Island in a two-story prairie-style home on West Koenig Street. Robert used his life science education in the food chemistry business, working as a cereal chemist for Nebraska Consolidated Mills before moving to Omaha in 1975 to work for ConAgra. Robert’s hobbies included home building and remodeling. He built two homes in Grand Island and remodeled many others in Omaha and later in Colorado. He loved all things domestic, and this included food. He was a master baker and even worked part-time after retirement at the Grand Island Cinnabon store preparing dough for the day’s baking. His other passion was that of invention, one of which earned him a U.S. patent. His eyes would still light up to the end of his life if given half a chance to explain his latest idea. After the death of his wife, Margaret, Robert found happiness again when he remarried an old friend, Mary Jane Kunz of Clinton, Iowa. Robert will be remembered for his indomitable spirit, the value he placed on education, his great intellectual curiosity and his vivid imagination. He was enormously proud of the success of his children and his nine grandchildren. Interment was in the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church Cemetery in Boulder, Colo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret; a son, Dr. Robert A. Pruckler; and a daughter, Marisa Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Kunz of Clinton, Iowa; sons Richard of Conifer, Colo., and Kurt of Los Angeles; a daughter, Kathryn Harberg of Boulder, Colo.; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
