Read More	----------Washington County, Iowa MCLAUGHLIN - Robert McLaughlin died at his home in Highland township Monday night following an illness which confined him to his bed for the past three months. For two years he had suffered ill health, but was able to be around until three months ago. The funeral service was held at his late home this Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Brigham, pastor of the Union Dale Church, and interment was made in the Ainsworth cemetery. In the death of Mr. McLaughlin the community loses one of its most substantial citizens. He was an uncut diamond. Without exterior polish he had a character worthy of esteem. He was positive in what he believed to be right. Born and reared in Cavan, Cavan County, Ireland, he was a true Irishman with all its wit and bluntness. His parents were William and Mary Mitchell McLaughlin. The mother died in their native country, and when Robert, who was the youngest of the family, was 21 years of age the father with his family of four sons and four daughters came to America. About 1873 the deceased came to Washington County and located in Highland Township, where he has made his home ever since. On the 3rd day of March 1878, he was united in marriage to Mary Wilson and to this union were born three children who survive the parents. They are Will of Elberta, California, Miss May McLaughlin, and Russell McLaughlin at home. There are also two grandchildren. Mrs. McLaughlin died in March 1896. In early life the subject of this sketch became a member of the United Presbyterian Church and after locating in Highland Township, he identified himself with the United Brethren denomination, being a member at Union Dale. In politics he was a republican and always stood for the propositions which were truly democratic, believing strictly in the rule of the people. Mr. McLaughlin's birth occurred November 22, 1840, making him 76 years and two months old.
