Description	:	Robert Mertz, 85, Bismarck, died April 7, 2004, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, at Seventh-day Adventist Church, with the Rev. John Turk officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to the services at the church. Robert was born on July 27, 1918, in Mertz Township, Sheridan County, N.D., to Gottfried and Marie (Baumann) Mertz. He married Erna Brod on Oct. 25, 1949, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They farmed for two years, and then moved to Bismarck. Robert worked as a unioni carpenter and was a member of the local Carpenters Union for 48 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to tinker on everything. He was a member of the American German Singers. Robert is survived by one son, Calvin, and wife, Pam, Murray, Utah; one daughter, Brenda Peterson, and husband, James, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Brian (Marilyn) Mertz, and Jennifer (Rob) Vollmer, all of Bismarck, Michelle (Bob) Curran, Wahpeton, Bradley (Miri) Mertz, Salt Lake City, Utah, Daryl (Shanon) Mertz, Provo, Utah, and Charles (Michelle) Mertz, Salt Lake City; four great-grandchildren, James Peterson II, Bismarck, Brendan and Bryce Ferderer and Emily Curran, Wahpeton; one brother, Walter (Eunice) Mertz, Minot; two sisters, Anna Strobel, Denhoff, and Hilda Wutzke, Verndale, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erna; his parents, Gottfried and Marie Mertz; four brothers; and two sisters
