Burial with military honors will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery, east of Madrid. Robert Nels Steinick was born at home in Madrid, Iowa on March 10, 1924. He was the fourth child born to Swedish immigrants Hilding Valfrid Steinick and Ellen Elvira Bengtsson Steinick. After graduating from Madrid High School in 1941, Bob worked for a time in Madrid and Worchester, Massachusetts before enlisting in the Army in January 1943. He served as a teletype mechanic in the Philippines and Japan during WWII. He was discharged in February 1946. In 1949 Bob was married to Geneva Anderson Johnson. They were divorced in 1971 and remained close until her death in 1996. Mr. Steinick began his postal career as a substitute clerk-carrier in 1947. In 1954 he was appointed by President Eisenhower to become Postmaster at Madrid, a position he held for nearly 29 years until he was selected as Postmaster at Boone in 1982. He retired from public service in 1989. Bob was very active in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States serving in a variety of leadership positions and as the editor of the Hawkeye Postmaster for many years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He had been active in the Madrid Lions Club. Bob also served as a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster with the Madrid Boy Scouts. Bob enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with his family, as well as visiting with his many friends. He had made his home at the Madrid Home since 2006. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ernest Harry Steinick and Hilmer (Pete) LaVerne Steinick, sister Viola M. Steinick, former spouse Geneva Steinick, and niece Donna Steinick Deal. He is survived by his daughter Rita (Gary) Houck of Radcliffe, his son Don (Nancy) Steinick of Ankeny, his 8 grandchildren: Jeffrey (Christine) Houck of Inola, OK, Blaine (Rene') Houck and Trev (Kathy) Houck of Radcliffe, IA, Darcy (Kevin) Kilpatrick of Rapid City, SD, Lara Steinick of Los Angeles CA, Donald (Denise) Steinick, Jr. of Boca Raton, FL, Kristoffor (Kellie) Steinick of Ankeny, IA and Amanda (Floyd) McIntire of Johnston, IA, 16 great-grandchildren: Ryan, Megan, Kaitlyn, Amber, Courtney, Ean, Karsen, Noelle, and Kari Houck, Devin, Brice, and Abby Kilpatrick, Konnor, Kayden, and Keegan Steinick, and Zakary McIntire, and great-great granddaughter Kaia. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, the Madrid Home, the Madrid Public Library, or to a cause of your choosing.
