McLeland was born March 24,1824,in Jefferson county Indiana,and died after a brief illness at the home of his daughter,Mrs.C.E. Loring of Cantril on the 11th of Aug.1899. Sept.11th,1845,he married Miss Charity Ann Smith and in 1849 came to Van Buren county and settled near Pierceville.In 1859 he bought land in Des Moines township and moved to it,where he remained till after death of his wife in 1892. R.N. mcLeland was a highly respected citizen.During the War he was appointed Captain of the home guard company and his house was headquarters for all soldiers who were fighting along the line.He joined the Baptist church at an early age and at time of death, had his membership at Bonaparte.Till within the last few years he took an active part in church and political affairs. He is the fourth pioneer of Van Buren county who has died in Cantril within the year.the men who made this county are fast passing away and their sons and daughters are following down the Western Slope.
