Memorial service will be 2 pm Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Bob, as he was known to friends and family, was born July 10, 1932 to Oscar Sr. and Maizie (Strohschein) Bren on a farm near Tunerville, SD. Following his 1950 graduation from Goodwin High School, Bob enlisted in the U. S. Navy. After completing basic training at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL, he attended Storekeeper School in Tennessee and was stationed in Florida before being assigned to the Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. While serving at Norfolk, Bob met the love of his life, Mary Sue Morton, when he was 18 years old and she was 16. They married at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Goodwin, SD, on August 3, 1952. God blessed this union with four children; Susan, Bobbe, Terry and Rich. After completing his naval service in California, Bob returned to civilian life and worked in various retail/wholesale managerial roles which required the family to relocate to communities in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Michigan and Ohio. In 1976 Bob retired from his Sales Manager role at Haines Gifts and Imports in Carey, OH and purchased the family business in Goodwin, “Bren’s Corner”. Bob and Sue owned and operated Bren’s Corner while Bob also worked as a Rural Letter Carrier. Bob and Sue retired from Bren’s Corner in 1989 and Bob later retired from the Postal Service in 1997. That same year Bob was recognized as Rural Letter Carrier of the Year for exemplary service and for leading the nation in contributions/carrier participation in his role as Chairman of the S.D. Rural Carrier Political Action Committee. He was further recognized by the National Rural Letter Carrier Association for six consecutive years as the leading state-level PAC Chairman. Bob was a member and former Church Council President of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Goodwin and, as a winter resident of Arizona, he was also a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Sun City. He was a member of the American Legion-Charles Curry Post and former President of Deuel County Lion’s Club. Bob was a Director of the Brookings/Deuel Rural Water System, served on his Sun City Homeowner’s Board and, as a self-proclaimed “old car nut”, Bob was a member of the South Dakota chapter of the Antique Auto Club of America as well as the Studebaker Club. He was an avid gardener, bird-watcher and loved nature. Bob was extremely proud of his Norwegian heritage and, as members of the Valdres Samband, he and his daughters traveled to Norway in 1999 to locate the Bren farm in Reinli, visit the Stave churches, and meet extended family members. It remained one of his fondest memories. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Sue, son, Richard (Lisa) Bren, daughters, Susan (Dennis) Hellmann and Bobbe (Craig) Bren-Carley, grandchildren, Austin Bren, Amber (Josh) Bren-Medlin, Chelsea Bren, Eliott Carley, Stuart Carley, Brent (Jenny) Kreager, Kristen Kreager, Staci (Eric) McDaniel, great-grandchildren Quest Coneys, Jordyn and Jaylynn Kreager, Rya and Myken McDaniel, brother Chad (Vic) Bren, sisters-in-law Janice Bren and Betty Lou Fain, brother-in-law Phillip (Kay) Morton, and numerous nieces and nephews for whom he cared deeply. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Maxine (Merlin) Johnson, brothers, Oscar Jr.(Connie) and Coye Bren, son, R. Terrence Bren and grandson, Spencer Carley.
