Read More	GREENWOOD – Robert Olin Marbert, 92, resident of 514 Marshall Road, died October 18, 2004 on Marshall Road while en route to his home. Born in Saluda County, August 11, 1912, he was the eldest child of Robert Olin and Mae DeVore Marbert. He was raised in the Kirksey Community where he grew up in Mountain Creek Baptist Church and attended Kirksey Elementary. He was a graduate of Ninety Six High School and received an AB degree from Erskine College in 1938. He then began his career in education at Harmony Elementary School where he served as teacher and principal for three years. He earned a Master's degree from Furman University while serving as principal of Saluda Elementary School. He then became Superintendent of Ridge Spring Schools and worked in that capacity for two years. With the onset of World War II, he entered the US Army where he served in the 91st Medical Gas Treatment Squad in Europe. Upon his return from the war, he taught at Saluda High School for one year before coming to the Greenwood School District. He taught at Greenwood High and served as Dean of Boys seven years. He earned a Masters of Education Degree in 1948 from the University of South Carolina. In 1953 he became principal of Blake Elementary and in 1956 with the opening of Northside Junior High School, he became its first principal and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1978. He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Greenwood County Retired Teachers Association where he served as president. Since 1980 Mr. Marbert has volunteered at Self Memorial Hospital (now Self Regional Medical Center) accumulating in excess of 21,000 hours. He has served as treasurer, vice-president, and president of the hospital auxiliary and in 1992 was given life membership in the Self Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The Silver Palmetto award was presented to him by the South Carolina Hospital Auxiliaries in 1986. In 1989 he was recipient of the Service to Man Kind Award given by the Greenwood Sertoma Club, and the Piedmont Agency on Aging presented him with a plaque for outstanding services from 1990-1996. He served on the board of directors and as president of the Piedmont Agency on Aging and was a member and chairman of the Greenwood County Beautification Commission, was a member of the Opel Club where he served as treasurer and was a member of the Greenwood County Election Commission for seventeen years. He was a year 2000 Recipient of the WYFF Jefferson Award for Volunteerism. Mr. Marbert filled his remaining free time with church and outside activities. He appreciated flowers and keeping his yard looking attractive. He was a charter member of the Greenwood Mens Garden Club. A member of South Main Street Baptist Church and the Adult 9 Sunday School Class, he also served on the board of deacons of the church. Surviving are a sister, Mary M. Boone of Greenwood, three nieces, Mary Hester of Greenwood, Emmie Pritchett of Athens GA, Jan Marbert of Fountain Inn; two nephews, Richard Marbert and Bobby Marbert, both of Greenville; and a great-niece, Mary Hester Owens.
