K, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry Robert, a 23-year-old Carver, MA Shoemaker, responded to President Lincoln’s call for troops after the April 12th bombardment of Fort Sumter by enlisting in the army on April 16, 1861 and was mustered a week later as a Private in Co. K of the 3rd Massachusetts. His regiment left the Bay State almost immediately after muster and were deployed to Fortress Monroe at Hampton, VA which they helped garrison.
