Bob was born on April 23, 1949, in Dubuque, son of Raymond and Mary (Lex) Bartels. When Bob was 7 years old, his father died. This taught Bob the value of time. On Dec. 19, 1970, Bob married Cindy Arlen, his high school sweetheart, at Nativity Church in Dubuque. Bob studied labor law at Loras College and graduated with an economics degree in 1971. He retired from John Deere Dubuque Works, where he worked the third shift in plant security for 30 years. In 1974, Bob organized fellow security guards and started the United Plant Guard Workers of America Local 218. He served as president. Bob started his painting business, Bartels and Co. in 1987, to pay for his children's college tuition. The Bartels and Co. number tag can be found on thousands of school lockers throughout the Midwest. Upon retirement from John Deere, Bob opened the One Mean Bean Coffee House in 2005. Bob was a fan of the Lakers, Packers and his beloved Dodgers. His favorite thing to do was enjoy a cup of coffee and a cigarette in the morning. Bob will be remembered for his work ethic, humor, generosity, and iconic moustache. Anyone who knew Bob has a story to tell. May he rest peacefully. Surviving are his wife, Cindy, of Durango; his children, Betsy Tupper, of Farmington, Minn., Jesse (Rachel) Bartels, of Peosta, and Benjamin and Dustin Bartels, both of Dubuque; his grandchildren, Elliot, Wyatt, Julian, Sophie, Gracie and Lillie; his sisters, Janet (Joe) Tekippe, of Sherill, and Maureen (Emil) Barth, of Rickardsville; and his brother, Roger (Cathy) Bartels, of Durango.
