I believe Robert Smith married a Elizabeth Manly after first wife died. This marriage was in 1842. I believe it likely that Robert Smith had a son Robert Smith, Jr., born abt. 1821. There's a marriage record that quite likely is his: 25 Feb 1840 marriage of a Robert Smith, Jr. to Catherine Rife. There's an 1840 census that would fit them. Then, there's a 1850 census in Clay Co., IL, that would fit them: Robert and Catherine Smith and 3 young children. I cannot determine what happened to Catherine Rife; I suspect she died in Illinois possibly along with one son John. I believe that Robert Smith, Jr., married second Sophia Nettleton, in 1855. An 1860 census shows Robert and Catherine with 3 new children but no sign of Robert's 3 young children by Catherine Rife. Did they go live with a relative? The document that connects the Robert Smith, Jr. of Washington County, IN, with the Robert Smith in 1860 in Clay County, Illinois, is a military record. [by Linda S. Standish Feb 2020] Addendum to biography: The original Memorial had a middle initial of "G" for Robert Smith. However, I have found no record showing any middle name or initial for him. Name on stone is "Robert Smith" with no middle name or initial. His U.S. Census for 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 show only "Robert Smith." Land purchase record shows only "Robert Smith". His NC marriage records show only "Robert Smith", as well as his Indiana marriage record. I have no record for him that shows a middle name. Moreover, in one record, his second marriage record, his name is shown as Robert Smith, Sr. All records I have found for his son, Robert Smith, Jr., show no middle name or initial. If he is a "Junior", then his name would be identical. My conclusion is that he had no middle name. Information welcomed. Additionally, burdened by the fact that the name "Robert Smith" is very common, I have not been able to determine his parents despite doing a fair amount of research on Ancestry. Too many Robert Smiths exist to distinguish among them. His one census does say he was born in North Carolina which is also where his first marriage occurred.
