Death of Robert Ward.The death of Robert Ward, which occurred early on Monday morning, marks the passing of another pioneer of Madison County. Possessed as he was with the physique of a giant and a remarkably robust constitution, his death will be a surprise to many who were not apprised of the fact that last spring he was stricken with Bright's disease. From the time the complaint manifested itself there was no hope of recovery and the malady worked with its accustomed swiftness. The deceased and all his family realized weeks ago that death could be staved off but a few short months at the longest and at the last all were prepared for the visitation of the ruthless destroyer of earthly happiness. Mr. Ward was of a whole-souled, happy temperament, big hearted and affectionate. Being always willing to divide his last dollar with a friend in distress, he did not accumulate a large portion of this world's goods, but was content with providing well for those dependent upon him. Obituary (part of same article)Robert Ward was born in Canada April 12th 1834. When quite young, he moved with his parents to the state of New York. Later in life he moved to Iowa where, on the 11th of December, 1857, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Hooper. Ten children were born of this union, seven of whom are living, viz: Cyrus Ward and Mina Plant, of Tilden; Xenia Plant of Wisconsin; William Ward and Vina Murdock in Colorado; Belle Cummings, in Norfolk and Jennie Strong, of Chadron Nebr. On September 22nd 1862, Mr. Ward enlisted in Co. C, 6th Iowa Calvary, at Taylorsville, Fayette County, Iowa, serving under General Sully and Captain L. L. Ainsworth. He took part in the battles of White Stone Hills, South Dakota, September 3, 1863, Tah-ka-ho kete July 28, 1864. He also saw service with his company in the battles of the Bad Lands August 8th and 9th 1864. He was honorably discharged at Sioux City Oct. 17th 1865. He came to Nebraska in 1868 and with short intermissions, lived in or near Tilden up to the time of his death. Previous to his enlistment, he was a member of the United Brethren Church, but by the rules of the church he was deprived of his membership upon ??ing (joining?) the order of Good Templars. ??? funeral service was held at the M??? Church on Tuesday, December 22nd and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to Odd Fellows' cemetery where the burial took place. " 2nd Article titled "Card of Thanks." "We desire to express our sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors, especially to the members of the G. A. R., who assisted during the sickness and burial of our late husband and father.
