Description	:	Robert "Bob" T. Brender, 86, of Wenatchee, a well-known businessman and civic leader of the Wenatchee Valley, died Saturday morning, May 4, 2002 in the Cashmere Convalescent Center. He was born on May 11, 1915 to Leavenworth pioneer residents, William and Doris (Jeffries) Brender in Leavenworth, where he grew up and attended school. Brender, 86, of Wenatchee, a well-known businessman and civic leader of the Wenatchee Valley, died Saturday morning, May 4, 2002 in the Cashmere Convalescent Center. He was born on May 11, 1915 to Leavenworth pioneer residents, William and Doris (Jeffries) Brender in Leavenworth, where he grew up and attended school. Bob served as student body president and graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1933. He then worked for his father in the operation of the Wenatchee Valley Auto Freight between Wenatchee and Leavenworth. On April 13, 1941, he married Dorothy Howe in Seattle and they made Leavenworth their home, where he continued his employment with his father. Bob served on the Leavenworth City Council in 1950, for two terms and in 1955 was elected Mayor of Leavenworth, serving until 1961. He was appointed acting Postmaster of the Leavenworth Post Office in 1961, a position he held until 1967. He was very active in city, civic and community affairs. He served as president of the Leavenworth Nonprofit TV Association, which built a TV translator station on Tumwater Mountain; Chairman of the Leavenworth project L.I.F.E. (Leavenworth Improvement for Everyone), which was the beginning of the transition of Leavenworth into the Bavarian theme. Bob was also instrumental in the promotion of the Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival and other community activities. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1965 and 1966; member of the Executive Board of the Association of Washington Cities for two terms and served on the Executive Board of the Chelan County Industrial Development Council; Delegate to the Governor's Conference on Design for Washington State in 1965; served on the Advisory Board to the Wenatchee National Forest. Together with Ted Price, they prepared the Comprehensive Recreation Report and made the presentation to the Inter-Agency Committee on Outdoor Recreation, which obtained State Grant monies for the City of Leavenworth in the beginning development of the Waterfront Park. On Aug. 23, 1967, he married Audrey Mounter Darlington in Seattle, where they made their home and managed the University Motel. In 1970, they moved to Wenatchee and purchased the Town and Country Motel and Bob continued to be involved in civic affairs, being a member and past president of the Wenatchee Hotel-Motel Association. In 1992, they retired. Bob is survived by his wife, Audrey of the family home; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ernie Senseney of Wenatchee; three sons and daughter-in-law, Doug and Linda Brender of Brier, Robert Brender, Jr. and William Brender, III, both of Wenatchee; stepdaughter and spouse, Linda and Barry Schlecht of Darby, MT, stepsons and spouses, Larry Darlington and Loren and Twyla Darlington of Cashmere, Van and Mary Darlington, Lloyd Darlington, Rod and Patricia Darlington, all of Leavenworth and Scott Darlington of Peshastin; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill. A Funeral Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Robert "Bob" T. Brender, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon, May 9, 2002 in the Ward's Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Dale Cook, officiating. Concluding Service and interment will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery. Those wishing to make visitation, may call at the Ward's Funeral Chapel, Wednesday, May 8, 2002 between 12 noon and 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Leavenworth Senior Citizen Center, P.O. Box 1033, Leavenworth or the Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2205, Wenatchee, WA. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
