Read More	************************* Published Dec. 27, 2010 - Humboldt, KS Robert Van Talkington, former president of the Kansas Senate and longtime Iolan, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 26, 2010, from complications of a stroke at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Robert Van Talkington, 81, was born Aug. 23, 1929 to William H. and Nannie (Patrick) Talkington, near Patrick, Texas. He was a standout baseball and football player at Wilmer-Hutchens High School near Dallas, Texas, from which he graduated. He attended Tyler Junior College, Tyler, Texas, on a football scholarship. From there he attended the University of Kansas on football and baseball scholarships. He lettered in both sports. He earned a B.S. in education in 1951 and his law degree from KU in 1954. He served in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean War. He was married to Donna Schmaus. They were married 58 years. She died in 2009. Following his military service he began his legal career as a private attorney in Iola, KS. He served as Allen County attorney, city attorney for both Moran and Gas, KS, and was attorney for Allen County Hospital and Allen County Community College. His career in the Kansas Legislature spanned 20 years. In 1968, he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives where he served two terms. He was elected to the Kansas Senate in 1992. He had served as vice-president of the Senate from 1977 to 1981; majority leader from 1981 to 1985, and was Senate president from 1985 to 1989. In 2002, U.S. Highway 169 in Allen County, Kansas was designated the "Senator Robert V. Talkington Highway" in recognition of his years of service to Kansas. He was a member of the Kansas Board of Regents, and was a KU booster serving on its Greater University Fund, its Board of Governors for the School of Law, and was a member of the Williams Educational Fund and Jayhawks for Higher Education. He also was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Phi Delta Phi, Masons, Shriners, Elks, and the American Legion. And he was a member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as an elder. Survivors include five children, three daughters, Jill and Dave McCaskill, of Cypress, TX, Jacki and Bob Chase, of Iola, KS, and Lisa and John Dreasher, of Hutchinson, KS; two sons, Jim and Staci Talkington, of Iola, and Tom and Sherlyn Talkington, of Prairie Village, KS; 11 grandchildren, Nathan, Claire, and Sarah McCaskill, Allison and Eileen Chase, Holden, Robbie, and Camden Dreasher, Jack and Camille Talkington, and Will Talkington. He was preceded in death by his seven brothers; a daughter, Jeanne Ann Talkington; and a son, Donald Patrick. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at the First Presbyterian Church in Iola. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Bowlus, or the Allen Community College Endowment Association and may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, Kansas, which is in charge of arrangements. **************************
