Two o'clock services for the 29-year-old youth, killed in an automobile accident on Wednesday of last week, were directed by Rev. H.L. Engdahl, assisted by Rev. A.B. Gravdahl, and the Choteau Veterans' Council. Many floral offerings and gifts in the name of the deceased were presented to the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert VanScherpenzeel, Sr. When Van Scherpenzeel left to travel on the ill-fated mission, it was not known definitely last week where he had gone or at what time his car hit the Teton bridge and fell into the river. Since the friends of Van Scherpenzeel in the Veterans of Foreign Wars post have telephoned scores of persons to determine additional details of the accident. It was learned that Van Scherpenzeel was at Choteau in the early evening on Tuesday night of last week. He then went to Great Falls, it is believed, to learn if Coleen Booth, formerly telephone operator at Choteau, intended to take a Great Falls train that night to Havre, where she is now working. In the meantime, not to Van Scherpenzeel's knowledge, she had left Choteau to Havre via automobile. Van Scherpenzeel apparently spent much of Tuesday night at Great Falls, and at 2:40 o'clock early Wednesday morning was seen in Fairfield. He drove hurriedly through Fairfield then arrived at the railroad bridge on Fairfield's west side and decided to drive back to Fairfield. The young man again drove through the main street of Fairfield, stopped by Marshall Decker's car as though he were going to ask him something, and instead turned around and drove out of Fairfield toward Choteau. It is thought he was looking for a restaurant that was open. He was never seen alive again. His car probably ran into the bridge about 3 a.m. Wednesday morning. The new 1950 Oldsmobile was not found until 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon when no one knew how long the car had lain in the river. Close friends of VanScherpenzeel said he was not normally a fast driver, was believed to be a good driver, and never drank to excess on any occasion. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rober Van Scherpenzeel of Choteau; four sisters, Mrs. H.C. Cavwood, Thermopolis, Wyo.; Mrs. Lester Rice, Cascade; Mrs. Lloyd Jensen, Agawam; and Mrs. Francis Truchot, Agawam. He was born at Choteau, May 1, 1920. During the recent war he was with Company K of the 186th Army infantry as a technical platoon sergeant in the Pacific theater. He served in battles and campaigns in the southern Philippines, Papua and New Guinea. His decorations and citations include the Silver Star, Asiatic Pacific Service medal, American Defense Service medal and Philippine Liberation medal, with one bronze star. He attended the Choteau schools for all of his early life and graduated from Teton High School in 1938. He was a member of the VFW and Elks club.
