Merchant Came to Montana in 1865 Helena, Mont.--Robert Vickers, early day Montana pioneer, oldest merchant in Virginia City and one of the outstanding figures in Masonic history of the state, died in at his home in Virginia City April 11, according to word received from Mrs. Martha F. Stutenburg, a daughter. Mr. Vickers was 93 years of age. News of the passing of this widely known and respected pioneer will be received with great sorrow throughout Montana, especially by members of the Masonic fraternity and Order of the Eastern Star, with which institute he had been prominently identified for more than half a century. He was a regular attendant at all sessions of the Masonic grand bodies of the state and by reason of that custom he became well known and loved by members of the fraternity from every section of the commonwealth. Mr. Vickers was born in England, Feb. 15, 1830. He came to the United States in 1854, settling in California, where for eight years he engaged in mining and the mercantile business. In 1862, he moved to Austin, Nev., where he remained until 1865, when he came to Virginia City. There he established the business which he conducted until his death. Mr. Vicker's store, which always enjoyed an unusual patronage for an institution of its kind, was known throughout southwestern Montana as "Content Corner." Mr. and Mrs. Vickers celebrated their golden wedding at Virginia City about three years ago. Besides his wife and daughter previously mentioned, Mr. Vickers is survived by four sons, Robert A., of Hardin; Dean W., of Weed, Calif.; George D., of Sheridan, Mont.; and Richard B., representative of the National Biscuit Co. with head quarters at Butte; and four daughters, Mary F. Gohn, of Virginia City, Nellie E. Buford, of Long Beach, Calif., Bessie M. Brown, of Searchlight, Nev., and Ella R. Mitchell, of Miles City, Mont. A number of grandchildren also survive him.
