Description	:	ROUNDUP — Robert W. Goffena passed away peacefully the night of Dec. 26, 2010. He was 94. He was born in Roundup on May 28, 1916, to Lewis W. and Cecilia Smith Goffena. Read More	ROUNDUP — Robert W. Goffena passed away peacefully the night of Dec. 26, 2010. He was 94. He was born in Roundup on May 28, 1916, to Lewis W. and Cecilia Smith Goffena. A rancher and farmer, he was a straightforward country man who did his duty for country, married, raised a family and built a ranch. He was a man who found his way back to his Catholic faith, though later in life. In World War II, he served as an airplane mechanic until Grandpa Goffena submitted a six-page request for his discharge because his family couldn't run the ranch without him. Grandpa took advantage of a new Congressional bill that allowed any agricultural worker to be returned back home to work the land. Corporal Robert W. Goffena was called home He was Uncle Bob to more than a few nephews and nieces. His duties for his father grew from running farming equipment to managing the cow operation. After marrying Mary E. "Betty" Thornton on Aug. 24, 1945, the two later started their own ranch. With five brothers and one sister, Bob is the last of his siblings to pass on the legacy. He will be missed greatly for his sense of humor, succinct targeted comments and his love of the land and, beyond its production, its geology. He is in heaven now, turning over rocks, herding woolies and asking everyone there when they will pump that oil well on his land. And of course he is with his wife Betty, whom he missed grandly. With a rocky start, losing their first child, they raised five children and built their ranch together with much sweat, tears and love. Dad truly loved being a rancher and believed no other life could be better. Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother; his siblings, Paul, Louis F., Vera, Wilbur, Wesley and Jerome; his wife, Betty; and a son, John Warren Goffena. He is survived by his children, Robert T. Goffena (Bette), Janice I. Denney (Norman), Michael C. Goffena (Cheryl), Deborah H. Goffena, and Judy E. Boogman (Jan); and 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Goodbye, Dad, and God bless you. Many thanks to the staff at St. John's Lutheran Ministries for taking good care of Dad and keeping him safely in your loving hands. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Roundup. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at St. Benedict's. Interment will follow at Mountview Cemetery, 1704 Central Ave., in Billings, at 2:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Roundup Memorial Hospital, St. John's Lutheran Ministries or a charity of your choice.
