Highland Recorder February 28, 1930 R. W. LIGHTNER DEAD As we were going to press, news reached this office of the death of Mr. R. W. Lightner,, an aged citizen of Little Back Creek, which occurred at his home at 10 o’clock, Thursday morning. He had been very sick for several weeks and his friends realized the end was near. Mr. Lightner was a widely known stockman and farmer of this and adjoining counties. He was a brother of our townsman, J. E. Lightner. We trust someone will send in an account of his life later. Highland Recorder March 7, 1930 Mr. Robert Warwick Lightner was born July 20th 1850, near the Bath-Highland border, and departed this life Feb. 27, 1930, being 79 years, 7 months and 7 days old. He was a son of the late Jacob and Nancy Warwick R. Lightner, and was a member of one of the oldest families of Bath county, but for more than 50 years he had been a resident of Highland county. On Nov.23, 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Augusta H. Bird, and for more than 52 years they walked the pathway of life together. She survives him, and though frail in her declining years, she was able to minister to him faithfully during his last illness. To their union was born seven children, five daughters and two sons, namely: Mrs. Irene Beverage, and Mrs. Margaret Beverage of Huntersville, Mrs. Georgina Wade of Lewisburg, W. Va., and Mrs. Delana Ryder of Valley Center, J. H. Lightner, of Dunmore, and Harry Lightner at home. One daughter, Rachel Cleveland, died in infancy. There are forty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren Mr. Lightner is also survived by one brother, J. B. Lightner of Monterey and two sisters, Mrs. Malcena Cleek of Jackson’s River and Mrs. M. E. Gum of Warm Springs. Two years ago last Nov. Mr. and Mrs. Lightner celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding at which time a large number of friends and relatives met in his hospitable home in memory of the happy occurance of 50 years before. In early manhood Mr. Lightner united with the Presbyterian church, but later in life joined the M. E. church, South, of which he was a member at the time of his death. His testimony was that he had put his house in order and was ready for the great summons. For several years he had been in declining health and for a few weeks before death came, his family realized the end was near, J. H. Lightner was unable to attend his father’s funeral, but all the other absent children were with him a part of the time and united with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lightner in doing all that could be done to alleviate his suffering and make his last days comfortable. A grand child whom he had reared, Frank Lightner. was also a great comfort to him and ministered to him faithfully. Mr. Lightner was widely known and had many friends whom he enjoyed receiving into his home, and especially was he fond of God’s ministers, regardless of denomination, and his doors were always open to them. Appropriate funeral services were conducted at his home by his pastor, Rev. R. V. Whitehurst. Hymns of which he was fond, some of which had been sung for him on his death bed, were used at his funeral. Pall-bearers were selected from friends and neighbors. Flowers were carried by four nieces, Mrs. J. G. Hiner, Misses Ruth Rexrode, Thelma and Mary Kathleen Bird. Interment was in Green Hill cemetery. Highland Recorder March 14, 1930 All who knew uncle Bobbie Lightner, as he was affectionately called around here, was a man like Howard Taft, good natured, cheerful, hopeful, always kind and tolerant, and they both left thousands of friends and not one enemy. I had the pleasure of visiting uncle Bobby several years ago, and found him so kind and good. We know he will be missed by his family and friends.
