Description	:	The Emporia Weekly Gazette, 22 Jan 1920 CONCERNING ROBERT WELLS Robert Wells, who died recently at his home in Bushong, KS, was one of the early settlers in Lyon County. He was born in Ross County, Ohio, December 13, 1837. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he volunteered for infantry service, served three months, and then reenlisted. He was in Company C, 54th Volunteer Ohio Infantry. He fought under Sherman at the battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Vicksburg, Jackson, Chickamauga and was in Sherman's march to the sea. He was born in Ross County, Ohio, December 13, 1837. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he volunteered for infantry service, served three months, and then reenlisted. He was discharged at Atlanta, Ga., in 1864, and returned to his home in Ohio. He was married December 13, 1864 to Elizabeth Ann Stookey. Mr. Wells is survived by Mrs. Wells, and three children: Almer S., who lives southwest of Bushong, Allen and Bertha Mae who live at the Wells home. Mr. and Mrs. Wells came to Kansas in 1868 and settled in Shawnee County. In 1871 Mr. Wells went back to Ohio, but soon returned to Kansas, coming to Lyon County, and settling on a farm in Agnes City Township. In 1874, he took his family, two teams and 40 head of cattle and started back to Ohio. He sold his cattle in Indiana. The next year he again heard the call of Kansas and returned to his old farm. Later he bought property in Bushong, where he died. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Mr. Barnon, pastor of the Bushong Methodist Church. Interment was made in the Council Grove Cemetery.
