Born at home in Norway on July 27, 1934, he was the only child of Annie Mae and Robert Esteas Young. He was valedictorian of his high school class in Norway. He graduated from Presbyterian College in 1956 and later received a Master’s Degree from Georgia Southern University. He began his career in Bamberg, SC, at Carlisle Military School and Bamberg High as a teacher and a multi-sport coach. From Bamberg he moved to Pamplico, SC, where his 1962 girls’ basketball team won the state championship. He spent ten special years in Estill, SC, as a teacher, coach and principal and then returned to the Norway-Neeses-Springfield school system as a principal and coach. He retired after 33 years in the public school system but later coached and taught at Jefferson Davis Academy in Blackville, SC. After his second retirement from the education system, he served as an Orangeburg County Summary Court Judge and then as a Municipal Court Judge for the town of Norway. He married Margaret Frierson in 1956 and she passed away in 1991. They had three children. In 1993, he married Susan Hogan Williamson and opened his heart to Susan’s three children. Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Margaret. He leaves behind his wife, Susan; mother-in-law, Barbara Hogan; and children, William Estes Young (Christy), Malynda Young (Lake Medlin), Susan Young Pennock (Chester), Andrea Williamson Darsey (Jad), Kelley Williamson Conway (Matthew) and John David Williamson (Jessica). Also surviving are grandchildren, Lindsay and Coleman Young, Ashlyn Hunt Boserup (Aaron), Alex Medlin (Miles Jackson), Chester, Robbie, Maddee and MaryLib Pennock, Olivia Darsey, James Conway and Josiah and Elijah Williamson. Robert impacted the lives of many people. In addition to his educational endeavors, he was a youth Sunday school teacher and a faithful servant of the Lord. His kindness, humility and wisdom set him apart. His sense of humor made life fun. Perhaps his greatest gift was his genuine interest in everyone he encountered and his deep desire to connect with others. He was dedicated to finding the good in everyone and was committed to the directive, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” He will always be remembered by his routine farewell, “Be nice and don’t fight!” The family suggests that memorials be sent to St. John’s United Methodist Church, P.
