His early life was spent in agricultural pursuits, and the foundation was here laid for the remarkable physical vigor which enabled him to endure hardships and engage in continuous labor beyond that performed by the average man. When he came to America he went directly to Athens, Ohio. By close economy he secured means to purchase a team and engaged in the coal business as a retailer, and for over thirty years, in heat and cold, in winter and summer, no more familiar object on the streets of Athens could be seen than "Uncle Bobby White" and his load of coal. His family consisted of six girls and six boys, for whom he always manifested the deepest affection. He is a member of the M. E. Church, and the advancing feebleness of age keeps him much of the time at the home of his son, Fred. P. White. If living, he will be eighty-one years old July 17, 1904.
