Born May 20, 1914, at Charlestown, Indiana, he was the son of Grover Cleveland and Rebie Pearl Wilborn Sanders. He attended Pleasant Valley Country School south of Protection and graduated from Protection High School in 1932. A longtime Protection resident, he moved to Bucklin. in 1996. He was Comanche County Farm Bureau Insurance Agent for 46 years, retiring in 1984, as well as a farmer and stockman. He was the last active Charter Agent for Farm Bureau Insurance at the time of his retirement. He also served several terms on the Protection City Council and was elected mayor of Protection for two consecutive terms in the early 1960's. He belonged to Protection First Baptist Church, and was past president of both the Coldwater and Protection Lion's Clubs, and he also belonged to the Bucklin Lions Club. He was also a one-time stockholder in both the Western Star the Protection Press newspapers. April 30, 1939, he married Agatha Case at Protection. Their son Gary was b born in 1940. They were divorced in 1945 On Sept 7, 1947, he married Calla Mildred Squire at Protection. She died August 26, 1991. Their son Hal was born in 1949 and son Kent was born in 1951. On Sept 14, 1996, he married Wanda Estes at Bucklin. She survives. Other survivors include: three sons, Gary of Protection, Hal and wife Cathy of Saginaw, Tex, and Kent of Olathe; three stepsons, Bud Estes and his wife Renae, Mike Estes and his wife Kristy, and Kelly Estes and his wife Debbie, all of Bucklin; a stepdaughter, Letty and her husband David Bachelor of Bucklin; three brothers, Ralph of Protection, Grover E and wife Betty of Lawrence, and Glenn Roger and wife Elaine of Winona, Minn; a sister, Mary and husband Elmer (Bud)Schultz of Protection, six grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers , Raymond and Nelson. Funeral was Wednesday, April 2, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in protection, the Rev James Pollom of First United Methodist Church of Bucklin presiding and pastor Randy Dirrim of First Baptist Church of Protection assisting. Burial was at the Protection Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church of Protection or to the Bucklin Lions Club, both in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029-0417.
