Description	:	Robert "Bob" Wilber, age 84, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Montrose Memorial Hospital in Montrose, Colorado. Robert Wray Wilber was born in the early morning hours of November 1, 1930 on the family farm east of St. Francis, Kansas to William Roland and Esther (Paschen) Wilber. Robert Wray Wilber was born in the early morning hours of November 1, 1930 on the family farm east of St. Francis, Kansas to William Roland and Esther (Paschen) Wilber. He attended St. Francis Grade School and St. Francis Community High School. Robert lost his right eye as the result of an accident when he was in second grade. During the 2nd World War, he and his brother often walked to grade school and at times were fortunate enough to be picked up by Loyd (Gaylord’s older brother) driving to high school. Robert always hoped to see him coming. His father was interested in airplanes and this interest was conveyed to both sons. This was further stimulated by the model planes the Cram boys had built which the Wilber boys saw while taking piano lessons from Mrs. Cram. Robert and Bill built their own model airplanes when they grew older. They saved their money during their school years and they had enough, would go up to the airport and take airplane rides from Harry Risch. Harry would place both boys together in the rear seat of his Aeronica and off they would go. Robert purchased Bob Cram’s Cessna 120 when he graduated from college and learned to fly. Both boys had a deep interest in aircraft throughout their lives. Robert graduated from high school near the top of his class in 1948. He played the trombone in the band, sang in the choir, was in the junior play and participated in sports. The loss of depth perception due to the loss of his eye handicapped him in some sports. He attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma and graduated with a BA and a double major in Mathematics and Physics in 1952. Robert obtained employment as an Electronic Engineer with the National Bureau of Standards in Colorado Springs. He operated radio transmitters on top of Cheyenne Mountain and Pikes Peak. He also made electronic measurements in Hawaii during the atomic tests in the Pacific. Robert was hired by Denver Public Schools in 1967. He taught science in Horace Mann, Jr. High School, Hill Jr. High School and retired from John F. Kennedy High School in 1992. He sponsored the ski clubs at Hill Jr. High and John F. Kennedy High School, leading the ski trip from each school nearly every weekend during the ski season. His students were active in Science Fairs, Science Olympiads and bridge building contests, accumulating numerous trophies. He obtained his Master’s Degree in science education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1980. He also helped teach continuing education courses in physics at Colorado School of Mines for other teachers. He served on the Board of Directors for the Pleasants View Metropolitan District and later became its first district manager. The district provided fire protection, emergency medical services, parks the recreation for a population of about 5000 living between Golden and Lakewood, Colorado. In this position he was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the district. He also obtained many grants from various sources to help finance various district projects. Robert also served on several civic committees including the Design Advisory Board for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden and the Jefferson County Human Relations Committee. He was a judge for a number of years at both the regional and Colorado State Science Olympiads. He joined the Pleasant View Lions Club in 1986 and the Golden Breakfast Optimists. He led a number of canoe trips into the wilderness areas of the U.S. & Canada. He also climbed 38 of the 54 Colorado 14000’ mountains. Robert built his dream house in Montrose, Colorado and moved there in 2005. He remained active in the Lions Club Transferring to the Montrose Lions Club where he held the offices of 1st vice president, president and zone chairman. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, two brother and a sister. He is survived by his cousin, Mary Jean Paschen of Des Moines and several second and third cousins.
